Basic was by no means a favourite child, far from it. His name is enough of an indication of that. His body too pale to stalk at night, the red of his wings too eye-catching and bright in the day, he was always hindering the progress of his siblings. After all of their complaints of how visible he was, they apparently did not see him slink away to leave forever. But perhaps that was because they didn't want to see. Basic has learnt to stand his ground with bravado and humour - a combination of those can get him through almost any tight spot - but he's a mean fighter when he needs to be. He roamed aimlessly until Conch caught his eye. She was so silent for a dragon so large and far more bulky than himself. She was made of strength and grace and kindness, the latter was evident enough in her eyes. They had the same eyes, perhaps he could be kind too. Impossibly, Conch likes him, and he vows to be his best for her and comes to her aid in every battle. He awaits the hatching of their eggs with far more nervousness than Conch. Sometimes he wishes he had her calm surety, but at least she's his rock. "What did they do to my baby?" Basic had never seen Conch like this. Her pain was so raw and terrifying, her power was undeniable and yet could not be of any use in such a hopeless situation. He felt the anger and the sadness too, there was nothing he could do to help except be there, by her side. The first child they had allowed out of their clan was no longer of this earth. Fate and Life were cruel sisters, Basic had known this from an early age, but after making a life with Conch he had almost forgotten. Life had been so good here, with her. After their initial struggles to have strong and healthy children, they had been able to produce three healthy clutches. All of their children grew up strong and spirited, and he and Conch were proud and immensely grateful parents. Their rocky start in making a family had made them both very cautious and over-protective. Their bright little Mirror boy from the next clutch had inisited he wanted to leave, to explore, and they had been relucant to allow him to spread his wings. They were sure to send him to a clan where one of their great grandchildren was already living, to make sure he was safe. That hadn't been enough. Both of them were gone. Basic began to think it wasn't his genes that were the problem in their family, causing weakness and fraility, but that the Mirror gene just carried bad luck. It would be some time before he sired any more children. Time, eventually, healed the pain and although Conch's next, most difficult, pregnancy gave Basic much anxiety, he kept it to himself. Their fears were unfounded. Conch was a strong, healthy dragon and excellent mother. Their new children were the healthiest he'd ever sired - and three of them were Mirrors. This was a great relief to Basic, and watching the development of his son Amyas put his superstition of the weak Mirror gene finally to rest. Amyas spent much of his time with his parents until he started a family of his own, a constant reminder to Basic of Mirror success. Raising four energetic children was exhausting though, and their clan and family continued to grow bigger than ever. There was much to do, and any future plans for a nest were too distant to contemplate. It's rare to see such a darling mirror... the apron is incredibly cute on him and I got a little lost in his and Conch's lore.
