Biography

The Prince of Light
The Prince of Light
As Emerald's first-born son, he could have been powerful from the day he was hatched, and in his youth he aspired to lead. But he soon came to realize that he did not possess the innate majesty or the commanding nature of his sire. His scales and patterning were far from magnificent, and even when he reached maturity, he was the smallest Guardian in the Clan. So rather than pursue power, he chose instead a dark, dank cavern classroom in which he taught the hatchlings the lore of the Clan, science, and mathematics. His knowledge of lore was universally admired, and he was beloved by every new group of students. But after centuries of quietly teaching hatchlings Clan lore, Drop discovered to his dismay that he was developing the gold scales that denote the highest-ranked royalty. He did his best to conceal the change, but within weeks his entire body was encrusted in gold-- a far more dramatic transformation than any other member of the Clan had ever undergone. Emerald recognized this as a sign that his first-born son must at last take his place as Crown Prince, despite his reluctance to lead. The modest, unassuming Drop fought against this fiercely, arguing that his small size and gentle personality made him unfit to serve as any prince, let alone Crown Prince. But Emerald's word is law amongst Clan Gemstone, and in the end his son had no choice but to acquiesce, and to leave the teaching of the hatchlings to another dragon. By Emerald's decree, his name became DropOfGold, and now he rules the Clan at Emerald's right claw. At first this caused unrest among the Clan, many of whom believed the just and decent Tairus's long rule made him the best possible Crown Prince. But no one dared oppose Emerald's will, nor did anyone dare to challenge DropOfGold when his son Mapoftheworld was the mightiest warrior of the Clan. For further protection, Drop recruited his giant young son Gilt as a personal bodyguard, and a flashy small dragon named Corona as his standardbearer. Given his powerful allies, every dragon realized that to challenge Drop would be to court death. And to everyone's surprise (most of all Drop's), he has grown into the position and is now hailed as a strong and just ruler, nearly as well-loved as Emerald himself. DropOfGold was previously named Lemondrop, a charming, sweet, and unassuming name that suited him far better. At first he wore his new name, as well as his new rank, uncomfortably, staggering beneath the weight of the unfamiliar responsibility, as well as the heavy gold accoutrements that a Crown Prince must wear. As a consequence, he was first known as the Reluctant Prince. But as he has grown into the role, he has become known as the Prince of Light. |
