Biography

Honey Drop Hubbard
Blade-heir and adopted son of Morning

Delicate-looking yet lethally capable, Honey Drop Hubbard lives for the pleasures of personal beauty and material gain. He spent his early years trying to stay out of the way of his father, from whom he learned the virtues of greed and emotional detachment from the fates of lesser dragons. His mother did not raise him, but he was born with gifts wrought of her malignant power: even in hatchlinghood, his body flickered with near-incorporeal brightness, like sunlight pouring silently through a window to blind the unsuspecting eye.

When he came of age, Hubbard set off to a renowned celestial training academy at the far South edge of the Sunbeam Ruins. He recognized that the dragons around him seemed to operate on principles of benevolence and integrity. Unbound by such frivolous notions, he excelled quickly among his peers in battle.

In the months after his training, young Honey Drop Hubbard went on to join private coliseum and arena battle teams, traveling throughout Sornieth for fame and fortune. Often underestimated in his fledgling career, he soon became a fan favorite, beloved for his striking beauty (which only compounded as his riches grew) and ruthless dramatic flair. He found, however, that glory alone was not enough. Hubbard craved an outlet for his inborn malevolent magic, with companions tenacious enough to seek power without the pretense of goodwill. As it happened, such an outlet was emerging, its destiny soon to intersect with his own.

...

After the sloshing oceans brought war and territory loss to the Southern Icefield's perimeter during Morningstar clan's first autumn in the Crags, it became clear to Cherry Syrup Chad that the exaltation ranks needed to be filled more efficiently. With Sebastian and Cane's influence on the political system, the call for greater profit (and ability to prioritize self-actualization and beauty among the clan's elite) was gladly heeded. Morningstar slipped into the minds of the clan's leaders over the weeks of their deliberation, making it clear that a new initiate was to take on the role of training exalt-bound dragons. Someone stunning, heartless, perfect; with Glitterboy values soaked into their very core.

And thus, Honey Drop Hubbard was recruited by Chad, who revealed to him in prophetic visions that he was to receive Morningstar's gift of sacrificial magic. Shortly after Hubbard's arrival to the clan, the arrangements for his reception were made.

On a shivering moonless night in early winter, Roman, Chad, Sammy, Cane, Sebastian, and Hubbard stepped across the iced-over snow to a clearing where concentric circles lined with sigils had been burned through the ice and into the ground beneath. A grey and blue Nocturne was brought from the exaltation halls by Diet Sprite Diego. The aberration bowed morosely to the gathered dragons before returning to the castle. Hubbard took his place and traced the largest symbol with his claw, dragging it slowly over the rough, frigid soil. The ritual had begun. Incantations of demonic origin fell from his mouth as though it were his native tongue; red and golden light flowed from his clawtips to his shoulders, warming his face, collecting and melting into opalescent pools on his body. He turned to the nocturne with a smile that filled his empty eyes, and sent it to Morningstar's eternal service. A thread of red light rose from the etchings in the ground, hovering over the Nocturne and sinking to the earth below, passing a final time over Hubbard's hand, permanently touching the opal patches on his skin with a warm, foreboding glow. With this, the ritual was complete. Hubbard laughed, the sound forming a loose vapor by his face before being consumed on the ever-present Icefield wind. The witnesses shivered.

The ritual's completion marked the opening of Morningstar Clan's Age of Iridescent Blood. From that evening onward, Hubbard alone was blessed with the ability to exalt dragons directly to Morningstar's service in exchange for the enjoyment of the forbidden rituals themselves and immense amounts of treasure.

Background Note: Prior to this, the clan (Mack) mostly trained mercenaries and simple clan-bound otherworldly defense patrols. Exaltation occurred as more of a spiritual transcendence, something passive mostly relating to tangible military needs. Not many other members of the clan are immediately aware of this shift, just the Deathless Ones, the eternal youth nobility, and a few others.

Hubbard adores his new role. He has a sense of vile childlike wonder as he learns that enticing trainees with his beauty and charm is fun, as is the ritual practice itself -- he sees his relationship to Morningstar less like faith and more like a direct paternal bond - his gifts are tangible, and he is the closest of the lair to being an adopted son of Morningstar.

Since Chad was the vessel through which Morningstar first touched his heart, Hub is drawn to his company, finding joy in the endless praise and encouragement in villainry that Chad offers -- there's also admittedly some comfort there, and the two may have become secretly romantically involved...

Cane and Sebastian adore him. He is precisely who they needed to enact their plans, but he does scare them considerably. They dote on him and provide him with luxuries and blood like a favorite son.
