Her name was Daybreak, Cyfddydd in the language of the clan she resided in. She could understand their language enough to get by, and she had picked up a handful of sentences since settling in. Good day, my name is, how much?. Lludw, her partner, taught her a few more. How are you?, my love, be safe, my darling, don’t forget to eat.
She did forget to eat, sometimes, during a long day of training her body for combat. She was raised a warrior, in the tradition of her mother’s clan, and while she had left home to explore the wider world she intended to honor that tradition. Often, Lludw would watch her exercises and comment afterwards on how different they were from the methods he was taught. His combat style was furious, fiery, brute strength, unstoppable; her swordplay swished and snapped like the crack of a whip, or like the ribbon dancers she remembered watching as a child. She credited her mother’s careful training. Lludw called it magic.
Once, after one such practice session, she found her thoughts wandering to the city from her mother’s bedtime stories. Waterdeep, far across the sea, a sprawling metropolis aching with magic--real magic, not the swordplay dances she trained with. She could see the ocean from the windows of the little home she shared with Lludw, gray and wide and speckled with gulls. There was little magic here, tucked away in bottomless caves and weathered trinkets and musty libraries.There was a mage or two in the fighter’s guild, a ruin far from town that was rumored to house an ancient deity, the potion-seller down the road.
When she saw Lludw crack open the door to the kitchen and caught a whiff of the shellbug skewers he was roasting, though, she found she didn’t mind that lack of magic very much.
