Early Life
Thistiel was always a rather curious little fae. As a hatchling, he'd leave his home and wander about the Starwood Strand, his short travels would often lead him to see many things. From the beautiful trees and falling leaves, the small bugs he'd watch skitter about, the birds flying far overhead, the rock formations and the moss covering it. And of course, the gems, crystals and other rocks. His eyes would sparkle every single time he came across a particularly beautiful crystal formation coming out from deep within the earth, no matter how many times he'd seen it, he was always impressed. He would take the tiny shards on the floor, put them in a pouch and return home to his worried mother, who too for the hudreth time had been looking for him. She would catch Thistiel in her sight, and leap from the branch she had perched on for a better view, catch his cheeks in her hands and look deep within his eyes. "I was so worried!" she'd always say, turning his head here and there to see if he had any injuries, and then hug him "Why do you keep running off like this? You know this place is dangerous when you're alone! You're but a child...". Of course, he would apologize, hear an earful from his mother about safety, nod and say he won't do it again, then show her what he'd found, to which after a frustrated sigh, she would look at the crystals her son had found. And soon off he was again, he couldn't stay away, after all, it isn't like he was going far, right? Eventually, as he grew older and bolder, he started to examine the other things surrounding the rock, poke around and discover that even the "normal" rocks, the boring, non-shimmering gray ones, had crystals inside them! The first one he found was pre cracked, he thought it was a broken egg at first, but as he picked it up and felt its noticeable weight, he knew it wasn't. Instead of bringing more crystals to the the increasingly larger hoard he had, many of which now decorated the trees his colony lived in, he brought the odd rock and researched away. Geodes, he eventually knew. He was fascinated, trying to find as many as he could, it was hard to identify one, and that's when he started to use his previously barely used magic. He wasn't a good fighter, though he was one good sorcerer he grew to discover. Lacking the physical strength and size to break many geodes he found, he used magic instead, at first he'd break them on accident, shattering them to millions of pieces. But he grew to be better at his craft, carefully parting them open like it wasn't even a singly object in the first place. It was then he found a particularly strange geode, on the outside it looked like many of the ones he'd found, but the weight of it felt... different. Upon inspection, he found it was not a rock, but instead an egg. He rushed to find its nest of origin, to no avail, so reluctantly he decided to bring it back home and care for it. Soon he had a Chiroite Burrower of his own, whom he named Plume, at first she was only a small little owlet, but eventually she grew almost as large as many of his fellow fae, and almost as large as himself. |
Still, as demanding as she was, and as much of a task it was to take care of what was essentially a large, needy baby, Plume proved to be very useful to his outings, even his once worried family, who at this point had grown tired of trying to keep him home, were relieved to know he had a protector to care for him.
Journey
Once Thistiel reached his adulthood, he decided to make a choice. There was little else for him to see and document in Starwood Strand, so he gathered his tools and books, waved goodbye to his family, and off he went.
He tried to let Plume stay home, and he almost succeeded in this task, but a few days later, whilst he was in the Parched Canyonwalks, he found her perched on a tree, watching him.
With a heavy sigh, and a slight droop of his frills, he allowed her to, now too far from home to send her back.
This choice proved to be the correct one. Thistiel wasn't a fighter, not that he couldn't, he was forced to force back the occasional predator back in his home, but it was nowhere near the dangers he'd eventually face. And while he was ambushed by either a predator, a Beastclan warrior trying to get him off their territory, or even the occasional agressive dragon, Plume was there in case conversation didn't work. She was fearless when it came to protecting what she considered, and was in a way, her family.
Though Thistiel often preferred to avoid all conflict if possible. He'd calmly introduce himself, show he had no weapons, and was simply a scholar doing his research. Most would let him go when he proved he was no threat.
Though it was quite hard to come across as sincere. He had never really interacted with many out of his species before, so when he found they didn't have the same frills Fae did, and he couldn't quite understand their tone. Many thought he was being sarcastic, sometimes outright disrespectful when he talked about his interest in gemstones.
This made it so he started to gesticulate with his arms. Being now an adult, it would be quite hard to learn how to express with his face like others did, but the gesticulating seemed to help quite a bit.
During his time in Dragonhome, he was left full of wonder. Sure, they weren't the same shimmering, magical crystals one would find in Starfall Isles, but they were beautiful regarldless, and this was amongst the place he stayed in for the longest.
He met many geologists and archeologists, who taught the yet still learning gemologist several tips and tricks, things he'd carry on for the rest of his life.
But he figured he couldn't stay in the Earth Domain for long. He needed to see more, he wanted to see more.
For his next desination, he decided to go to the Viridian Labyrinth, then the Sunbeam Ruins, the Tangled Wood, the Sea of a Thousand Currents (or rather, just the Floatsam Town and Churnscar Wharf), the Ashfall Waste, and finally, the Shifting Expanse.
How unprepared he was.
Being so far away from Starfall Isles, he never expected it to be as deadly as it was. The sand in the Charged Barrens felt strange beneath his feet, almost tingly, and he'd often get shocked just by wandering, though it also felt like something was pulling at him when he tried to fly. Plume kept hooting and trying to get him to leave, but at this point, he was lost.
And then, it happened.
A ligtning storm, unlike anything he'd ever seen erupted, teal flashes of light and energy came from the skies and striked the ground below. He desperately tried to flee, but the storm seemed to get more intense by the second.
Plume flew about desperately, and as a last ditch effort to at least keep her safe, he conjured a shield around her and-
...
Darkness, he'd been struck.
When he awoke,

Did you know? While there aren't any mushrooms that look like crystals, which is a shame... There are, in fact, mushroom rocks? We'd like to think this means mushroom geodes are possible! (Though they probably aren't...) |
