Some of the creatures of this world only look like dragons because they mostly deal with dragons: in their fears and desires, by their oaths and bargains. Tallow cannot remember a time when she wasn’t granting wishes, though as those wishes evolved (from the base needs of food and shelter to the more sophisticated frustrations of expectations and society), there is one part that remains the same. She must explain to the petitioners who seek her out the difference between trade and wish. An exchange is made in expectation of a fair and equal contract; a wish is a gift for a boon, a sacrifice for an out. Something desperate and last-resort. Few petitioners arrive as desperate as her current assistant. She likes him, though - likes his drive, his adaptability to his new wax-and-paper form, and his understanding that sometimes magic is cruel and sometimes judgements are harsh. In the quiet between petitioners, they make more like him: younglings shaped like dragons but burning like candles, and she sends them out into the world, little avatars of fire and redemption. |
