DESMON |
"out of pain / we feed this feverish plot, we are nourished / by the mystery"
The Fish, Mary Oliver |
***** Desmon is a little too quick to obsess, a little too free with his own energy and resources. At first it was only normal hatchling-questions - why this, why that, how does that work? Things that have answers. People around him ready to humour him and give him those answers. But he grew up, and he learned too much, and now he has questions that no one has answers to. Is there a cure to his mother's curse? What does the future hold? Will he be remembered? There are darker magics that promise a great many things, and Desmon is balanced precariously on the edge of getting sucked in.
Curiosity is a fickle beast. Beware it not lead you astray.

throwing around some potential lore ideas
throwing around some potential lore ideas
- desmon is a highly reclusive yet energetic dragon with a great interest in scholarly and scientific pursuits, though often of a more... unusual-and-potentially-extraordinarily-dangerous persuasion
- due to being both a skydancer and a light aligned replica, desmon is overwhelmingly sensitive to magical energies and the emotions of individuals around him to an abnormal extent, even compared to other light skydancer replicas. sometimes even to distressing or physically painful levels, which only further serves to drive his reclusive and avoidant behavior
- although he's a replica, he often prefers to maintain his appearance along the lines of as-close-to-the-most-average-skydancer-you-can-imagine as possible, and he learned to do so fairly quickly as he grew up. largely because any significant deviations, even if they felt more natural to him, would inevitably make others curious and would draw them towards him. their questions and curiosity, even if well-intentioned, radiated off them and induced such an overwhelmingly intense burning sensation in desmon that he would lock up and become nearly unable to speak to them, much less answer them coherently. his more mundane appearance also served the side effect of protecting him from those who were... less than charitable towards "freaks" like him
- he already has very minimal levels of social interaction, which can easily have adverse effects on his wellbeing if he's not careful. an issue which is only further compounded by how easily he can become carried away with his work and also by the fact that his internal drive for social interaction is highly suppressed, so he lacks the same hunger sensation the majority of other replicas have and he can very easily miss the signs. as a result, he needs to consciously pay far more close attention to his over all health and satiation in order to avoid the weakness and starvation
- desmon can become utterly absorbed in his work far too easily, leading him to hole himself up for days if not weeks on end in a frenzy of curiosity and an overwhelming desire to Know and discover more. combined with his already minimal social interaction and his subdued hunger drive, this can easily put him in very dangerous situations if he gets too carried away
- he's still just as incredibly curious as he was as a hatchling, but that's now often outwardly tempered by natural maturity and grace as he's grown older and more knowledgeable. however, if something excites him, that refined, mellow impression of him shatters incredibly swiftly
- as a hatchling, he didn't know how to deal with his ability to sense and experience the emotions of those around him, much less understand how to make sense of anything he felt or why it was happening, which lead to a significant number of meltdowns from emotional overstimulation. as an adult, desmon has become somewhat better at coping with it, but still can become extremely overstimulated in the wrong circumstances
- the sparkles in his fur pattern have a natural glow to them, which is enhanced by his shapeshifting nature as a replica
- the design of the Firebird Feathers skin is a glowing marking pattern he can create thanks to replicas' inherent ability to shapeshift, enhanced by his nature as a light dragon. he doesn't always display it in order to not draw too much attention in public, but he often feels more at ease with it and often adopts that appearance in private when he's holed up in his lair. he's also been known to display it as a mean of showing off from time to time. (the skin is entirely optional to show in art, and if it is depicted, it doesn't have to be exact as long as the general theme and swirly pattern style remains. he is a shapeshifter, after all)

Pastel-eyed Replicas have a more subdued internal drive for social connection. They weaken at the same pace as their nestmates, without sufficient magic feeding them, but the hunger doesn’t remind them as effectively as it should. -
About Light Aligned Replicas wrote:
Light-aligned Replicas are more sensitive to the emotional state of dragons that they absorb their power from, and this is sometimes reflected in their physical form. Mood ring or mind-reader? -
About Skydancers wrote:
The most unusual feature of this species is the translucent bony sphere located in the center of their forehead. This gem-like orb connects directly to the Skydancer's skull and the delicate antennae surrounding it are sensitive to minute vibrations. This ability allows the species to sense when magical energies are present, and to sense the disposition of other dragons and creatures by the subtle energy given off by their body and state of mind.
Individuals of this species are frequently chosen to mediate clan disputes. Their ability to read energy and emotion makes them excellent at questioning feuding clan members and ferreting out the truth of a situation. This ability is not without its weaknesses; some dragons may have energy and emotions that are difficult to read. Unscrupulous individuals with something to hide and foreknowledge that a Skydancer will be questioning them may imbibe a concoction of herbs intended to alter their own energy and confound a Skydancer's senses. -
About Light Dragons wrote:
The Light Dragons of the Sunbeam Ruins are philosophers. They prefer to be unbiased and logical, revealing the nature of the world as does the rays of the sun. Of all the dragons, light dragons are the most scholarly, holding the pursuit of truth as the highest virtue a dragon might aspire to. Scrolls and relics are their favored treasures.
The Light flight is dedicated to exposing all truths, even dangerous ones.
Dragons of the Light flight may be bioluminescent or glow faintly.
on a journey to do the stupidest thing possible with this guy and see if i can get him to level 25 completely solo with no other dragons in the party.

level 0 - setup
swapped meditate for scratch
swapped contuse for shred
did not tincture. i'm a cheapskate :muscle:
training fields: levels 1-6
2/18/24 - stayed in the training field, followed the guide for stat distribution. moved to the woodland path at level 7
used potions often to minimize resets until i was taking little enough damage to be able to heal with sap
- lvl 1 - STR 4 | QCK 9 [Shred]
- lvl 2 - STR 10 | QCK 10
- lvl 3 - STR 18 | QCK 10 || + Sap [Shred, Sap]
- lvl 4 - STR 20 | QCK 15
- lvl 5 - STR 28 (26) | QCK 15 || + Elemental Might (+2 STR)
- lvl 6 - STR 30 (28) | QCK 20
woodland path: levels 7-10
2/18/24 - stayed in woodland path, followed the guide for stat distribution. added eliminate (i doubt this would be possible without it). moved to scorched forest at level 11
at level 7 with these strength stats its already enough to 1 shot every enemy in the woodland path without scratch
used potions to minimize resets as much as possible until i was taking little enough damage to be able to heal with sap (and not drop below 35-70 breath)
- lvl 7 - STR 38 (34) | QCK 20 || + Elemental Might (+2 STR), + Eliminate (overwrote shred) [Sap, Eliminate]
- lvl 8 - STR 43 (39) | QCK 21
- lvl 9 - STR 47 (43) | QCK 23 || + Ambush
- lvl 10 - STR 51 (47)) | QCK 25
scorched forest: levels 11- 12
2/19/24 - stayed in scorched forest, began to deviate from the guide. the guide is built for specific builds and assumes you have at LEAST 2 dragons on a team, so i need to tweak the numbers to make it work for a solo dragon. moved to sandswept delta at level 13
starting in this venue i had to be VERY careful with which packs i started on because even at level 11 most of the 3 packs can wipe me before i charge eliminate. weak 2 packs or packs of meditate users are preferred.
potion chugging is a MUST for survival here until you're fast enough to outspeed most enemies. more strength isn't needed since at level 11 with 56 strength its enough to 1 hit elim all enemies
at level 12 the build was fast enough to not need to rely on potions as much and could heal more through sap to conserve resources
- lvl 11 - STR 56 (52) | QCK 25
- lvl 12 - STR 56 (52) | QCK 34 || + Haste [Sap, Eliminate, Haste] - (i could've added this at level 11 but didn't think about it until 12)
sandswept delta: levels 13
2/19/24 - moved to sandswpt delta. deviating from the guide more since as long as my strength is above what's required to 1 hit elim all enemies in a venue, i only need to worry about being fast enough to get in enough turns to avoid getting hit too much
haste is a must and its still important to be smart about which starting packs you go for
- 60 STR is not quite enough to take out a greatshell in 1 hit with elim. they are the only enemy at level 13 that still needs to be scratched once, but despite that it doesn't make a significant difference or pose serious risk due to how slow they are
- lvl 13 - STR 60 (54) | QCK 39 || + Elemental Might (+2 STR)
silkstrewn wreckage: levels 14
2/19/24 - moving up to silkstrewn at 14 because my stats should be good enough to handle the common enemies, but have yet to see how boss encounters will play out with a solo dragon. luckily this is a venue with a lot of meditate users so it's slightly easier to avoid damage
- bosses are possible with good breath and good health, but potions will still be needed. moth keeper is going to be especially problematic as it's an Arcane enemy which is highly effective against light. killing it with eliminate, even if it means running out of breath, before it can use an elemental slash attack may be necessary as i can't rely on luck to dodge forever
- lvl 14 - STR 65 (59) | QCK 40
blooming grove: levels 15-?
2/19/24 - moved up to blooming grove at level 15 for the higher XP drop even though i could still get it from SSW. 68 strength at level 15 is still too low to 1 hit elim all enemies, so the tortoises still need to be scratched, but the addition of a second ambush will make this much easier from here on out even with needing to scratch
stayed for level 16, since although XP gain is slow, it seemed safer than making the jump to the cave. it's a slog at 122-250 XP per battle and 71k XP points required, but the increased strength makes it much more comfortable. will need to consider battle stones and stats but i suspect rally will be absolutely necessary going forward in order to keep up with STR, QCK, and enemy stats
- lvl 15 - STR 68 (62) | QCK 44 || + Ambush
- lvl 16 - STR 73 (67) | QCK 44 || (looking at the point distribution it would likely be more beneficial to only go to 43 QCK at 15 and put more to STR to be able to reach STR 74 by level 16)
