Biography

Gemstone | she/ her | elder

bio!
---

Gemstone and her brother Jaspers were raised in the depths of the Sea - though they always knew their home clan once settled on the surface, many years ago. The siblings were given the best education the Sea of a Thousand Currents had to offer - at the bequest of the scholars of the Drowned Sactum, they were tutored in water magic, the history of the Sea and its occupants, and all the seafaring skills one needs to know living underwater. When the siblings had finished their schooling, the elders of their clan deemed them mature enough to know their history.

The two siblings had never known their parents, and were raised communally as was their home clan's tradition, so neither Jaspers nor Gemstone never bothered to question their lack of family ties, at least not for long. But a handful of their elders did get the chance to know their parents - two travelers who'd crossed paths passing through the Tsunami Flats. A storyteller with a quick wit and a knack for entertaining, and a nomad with a larger-than-life personality and a boisterous laugh. The pair enjoyed a nest in the Tidelord's honor as the clan around them prepared for their winter solstice festival. In just a few short weeks, the eggs hatched, the festival came to an end, and the travelers departed alone in separate directions, just as they'd arrived. And that was all.

Hearing the story didn't prompt a major life change for Jaspers nor Gemstone - in fact, they both continued on the next day just as they had the day before. But the seed was planted, and was watered drip by drip every time either heard something to hearken back to the story they'd been told - "winter solstice," "nomad," "nest." Soon the seed grew into a sprout, then something so big it couldn't be contained. It was a moment of pure serendipity when Jaspers and Gemstone met one day, each with a question burning on their tongue - the same question, "Who are they?"

They'd discuss it later, through the night and into the morning, and nearly every day after. Their desire to meet their parents wasn't driven by a desire for companionship, nor bonds of blood - they were perfectly content with the relationships they'd made through their lifetimes, and the deep-seated tie they shared with each other. The motivation the siblings carried, driving them to research and reach out for any possible connection to their birth parents, was pure curiosity. Any leads they caught, they'd hold on tighter than a fishing net, hoping for a big catch inside - but nothing ever seemed to come of their search. And after the Tidelord's disappearance, the storm that razed the seaside and below, there were plenty more vital tasks to take up space in their minds. Gemstone in particular was struck by the changes to her beloved sea - Jaspers was shielded from the depths of the destruction, but for moons following the storm Gemstone swam out daily with or without her crew to turn over the debris on the seafloor, searching for survivors, salvage, or submerged scavenge to bring home as a paltry prize. As the years passed, the siblings' dream faded, but it never left their minds. Certainly not Gemstone's.

The decision was already made, no matter how much she hesitated to share it publicly or even with her brother. Time had proven for the both of them that it wouldn't wait - any day could bring a disaster to scale of the hurricane that pervaded in so many tiny aspects of their daily lives. Any dragon could notice the way the clan's hunters and scouts spent precious minutes of daylight bidding farewell to their families, the way scholars fastidiously tracked the currents of seawater and seamagic with a fervor that hadn't existed years ago. Maybe the next disaster would wipe some other region off the map, and Gemstone's chances of finding her parents would be reduced to nothing. And that assumption was optimistic enough to assume they were still alive and well.

It was just another night when Jaspers returned from a day at the Sactum, and Gemstone revealed her decision.

To say he was surprised would be an understatement. He'd yelled - incredibly out of character for someone who was usually a "think-before-speaking" type of dragon. They were both so surprised that neither had reacted, for a moment, and then Gemstone had begun to explain herself. They were growing old, she'd said with a pointed glance at the table where Jaspers frequently invited his friends for a rousing round of barnacle bingo or cuttlefish canasta, and she felt there was more to accomplish than board games. Jaspers didn't disagree, per se, but Gemstone allowed him no time to choose which side of the coral he'd land on - perhaps knowing if she let him choose, he'd waver between options for many, many moons. She left before dusk, leaving all her worldly belongings behind in their shared den, and swam to the surface even as her heart tugged weakly on its most treasured tie and her tears blended with the salty seawater.

A blue-and-green Imperial leans towards the sea floor, each swoop of his strong, leathery wings through the water carrying him deeper into the water's grasp. He's removed the layered clothes that adorn his body when traveling by land or sky; they'd get waterlogged and create drag if he were to carry them along on this delivery. Indeed, it's the parcel tightly tied around his waist that's slowing him down - there's no point in waterproofing the contents of a package if it is to be opened underwater, after all, so no doubt the items inside are soaking up water and weight with each stroke.

Before long, the courier dragon's destination comes into view, gently lit by schools of tiny, bioluminescent fish. Humble sea caves open into pure darkness in the scant light of dusk, but Alfonzo is not afraid. He's traveled further through territory far more hostile, that's for sure.

While he's used to making direct contact for deliveries, this one in particular was requested by the sender to be dropped off just like this, a surprise in the middle of the night. She did add a handsome tip for his trouble, which Alfonzo appreciated. Abiding by his customer's request, Alfonzo deftly unties the cord securing the parcel to his back, and tucks it just inside the cave with the widest entrance. As he swims away, a few sea creatures creep out from the darkness to investigate the foreign smells emanating from the package...

My dear ones,

It's been a long time since I left home, and Jaspers as well. Truth be told, we're not yet ready to return, and if ever we are able to, I'm afraid our stay will only be temporary. We have found what we were looking for above the waves, but we will always remember our home in the Drowned Sanctum and remain grateful to all of you for looking after us all these years.

I wished to send along a gift of good tidings - there is abundance on land; food and wealth available readily, but it all looks quite different to what we're used to under the sea. Here are some items I've gathered that may be of use.

Jaspers and I wish you good luck, great harvests, and prosperity like never before.

Kokiri a light shimmering spiral sets off from the Drowned Sanctum. She had just been bestowed her title of courtier, with the wet fabric of the map grasped in her metallic claws. She's never been outside the Sanctum, but she was ready for the challenge, Giovanni had been the one to give her the directions to The Sunbeam Grotto.

Kokiri dances her way between the schools of bioluminescent fish and coral that surrounds The Sanctum. Her robe feels light on her skin, and a ping of dread arrives for when she surfaces and will feel the weight of her water-logged attire. Just as that thought had run its course, she arrived at the surface toes sinking softly into the pale sand of the beach. She looks around a bit dazed from the vibrance of the sun now seeming to beat down on her...it feels warm.

She composes herself and finds a dragon who looks familiar. Kokiri hands it off "I believe this is addressed to you...from the Drowned Sanctum." she bows and makes her way back to her dark home in the sea.

When the letter is opened, the lettering though legible looks quite scratchy.

Gemstone and Jaspers

Thank you for the kind letter and bountiful foods we have not laid our tongues on. We're all happy to hear that the both of you have found what you've been looking for on land. There is no need to return, as I know it is a journey just to visit. There is no need to thank us for looking after you both, it truly was our pleasure. Since you both shine with your bright personalities possibly brighter than the bioluminescence of the fish that circle around the Sanctum.

Giovanni sends good tidings to his mother, Sunset. Do make sure she gets this message as well. He knows he has been gone for what seems like a lifetime. He knows how difficult it is to have the first hatchlings leave the nest, as he has some of his own now. If Sunset wishes to have him by her side, he would part the tides to be reunited, but his legacy would remain here.

Good tidings, hopeful to have more letters flow more freely between The Drowned and Sunbeam,

After reading the letter, Gemstone tucked it into her chest feathers, feeling its light but unmistakable weight close to her heart throughout the rest of her day. She had worried about its contents, a dark corner of her mind convincing her that her decision to leave many moons ago would've soured her former clanmates' opinion of her. Yet, to see Kokiri climb her way to the surface just to deliver a reply...Gemstone smiled slightly, reaching a claw up to touch the crisp corner of the letter, even though she knew without a doubt it was still there. Maybe things were finally changing in her old home, just like she herself and Jaspers had changed.

Even so, she felt she'd said all she had to say to Jaryn and the rest of her clan. Perhaps she'd send another gift, eventually, or deign to visit once she truly felt ready. But, as Gemstone stared out over the late afternoon sea, water gleaming in the sun's golden glow, she didn't know what she might write in a reply. After a glance over her shoulder to confirm she was alone - not that she felt threatened here, just that she wanted her reactions to remain private - Gemstone unfolded the letter and read it over a second time.

Oh...Giovanni. Gemstone remembered him vaguely, a stern-faced elder of the clan who, as it turned out, was a descendant of one of Sunbeam Grotto's councilmembers. Her decision was clear - it would be up to Sunset to reply. As she gazed from the cliff's edge to the ocean below, Gemstone caught sight of the matriarch dancing in the sky with some of her youngest descendants. She leaned forward, stretching her wings out to catch the sea breeze and drift towards Sunset, letter clasped firmly in her claws and a weight lifted from her shoulders.

The following letter was hand-delivered to Giovanni by a postal dragon who quickly made his exit after his charge was passed over. Giovanni's name was written on the envelope with a flowing script in a shimmering gold ink that caused a sense of nostalgia to wash over him. Both the envelope and the letter within were made of a light-green rubbery material that Giovanni recognized as processed kelp, a clever yet difficult-to-craft waterproofing solution.

Giovanni -

It is with great pleasure that I hear you are well beneath the waves, and with a thriving clan and growing family to call your own! While it may be true that many years have passed since your departure from our humble shores, I bear no grief towards you - I understand that under times of stress, one must shrink their sphere to weather the storm. Not only do I accept it, but I'm enthused to hear you've carved out a home and family of your own! I wouldn't trouble to ask you to return solely for my own selfish wishes - I've been blessed with a grand, sprawling family tree, and enough company to fill each day. Though, I will say that if any of your offspring find their way to Sunbeam Grotto, they will be welcome to stay as long as they desire!

Perhaps this is too soon to ask, but our clan will be celebrating Wavecrest Saturnalia in the turn of a few moons, as is tradition. It's not uncommon for dragons from neighboring clans to join us in the festivities, and there is ample space available within the Grotto for sea-dwellers and terrestrial dragons alike. If your clan would like to send a delegation to Sunbeam Grotto for the occasion, the offer is open! No hurry to respond either way - we still have many weeks until the preparations will begin.

Do pass along well-wishes to Jaryn on behalf of myself and Sunbeam Grotto's Elder Council. Such a longstanding friendship between clans is something to treasure!

All my love,
Sunset
