࿆☽ Biography ☾࿆
Like many of the Wind-born, Gale dreams of traveling to a far-off place. His destination, however, is one that even the most stalwart travelers would struggle to reach.
It is a place he sees only in his dreams. He doesn’t know what might have inspired it. Doesn’t remember the first time he saw it. All he knows is that whenever he dreams it, it fills him completely with comfort, peace, and a sense of belonging—so much so that whenever he wakes up, his clanmates seem like strangers to him. As a child, he struggles to explain what he sees. Paint is his friend: He spends many quiet hours by himself, smearing pinks and whites and golds upon thick parchment. When he becomes a bit older, and at last finds his voice, he describes his dream destination to the people around him. It is— A serene valley...or a plateau, perhaps. There’s a meadow with waves of grass, undulating and golden in the sunshine. And here and there—small trees and bushes, their branches heavy with fragrant flowers. The breeze shakes them, and delicate pink petals swirl towards the sky.

He thinks he sees more in the distance: a tower, or is it a mountain? But as with all dreams, the edges of that world are hazy, and so he focuses on what he understands for certain.
He describes the field to anyone willing to lend an ear. He refines his paintings of it. Words and pictures held up together, as he searches for the one place he’s certain he belongs. Yet as the years pass, he understands that he will not find it here, upon the Windswept Plateau. His clanmates do not know of it. Neither do their neighbors. Neither do the travelers, merchants and adventurers and sorcerers, who pass through. “You heard of it in a story, maybe,” they say to Gale. “A tale, or perhaps even a painting, that you encountered as a child?” And Gale considers it. It’s possible, after all. He doesn’t know where it is... But that doesn’t mean it can’t exist. And just because others can’t find it doesn’t mean he won’t. His clan helps him prepare for the journey. They load him down with supplies, advice, encouragement. And goodbyes, so many of them, for they know they won’t see him again. |
Gale has no wings, but he travels with the same vigor possessed by the storms he’s named for. His first stop is the Starfall Isles. They’re close by, after all, and their starwood groves are famous the world over.
But the field he is searching for is not here. The Arcanites are sympathetic. They respect his quest, admire his willingness to pursue his dreams. They give him more advice, and they send him on his way. Gale goes, then, to the Southern Icefield. It’s close by, and he’s heard that, thanks to draconic magic, there are some mountains here that remain locked in eternal spring. Perhaps his precious flower field is among these. After several more months of searching, however, this proves not to be the case. He heads back to the main continent. He stops at each elemental region. Each time hoping he’ll find the field... ...And disappointed, each time, when he does not. Dragonhome is his final stop. He comes here last, tired and discouraged, for most of the Earthshaker’s lands are barren desert, and he knows he will not find the flower field here. And, indeed, he does not. So he ponders what to do next. It’s difficult: While he’s found a clan to take lodgings with, he doesn’t have much money left. And he knows it would not do to rely solely on their kindness. |
He gathers his courage, approaches the clan elders. He explains his situation to them, and asks if they can give him a job.
And to his surprise, they respond with compassion. They tell him he needn’t worry, and he can stay as long as he likes. Still, he won’t accept their charity. He offers to assist their gatherers instead. The clan appreciates his earnestness, and they agree that he can help. The work is hard—but it isn’t unpleasant. The other gatherers are helpful and hardworking. They admire the skills Gale has picked up during his travels, and their advice helps him quickly acclimate to the harsh desert. He’s forgotten about the camaraderie that comes with being in a clan, the warmth it gives his heart and soul. But this new clan is helping him remember—and re-experience it. He begins to wonder if he should leave. If he even needs to seek out the flower field again... He considers this one afternoon, while he’s out with the diggers. As he turns a rock over, he sees something beneath. His questing claws pull up several small, dark things, and he leans down to inspect them more carefully. Seedpods. |

The wind blows, and he smells—briefly, but it’s there—the sweet scent of flowers.
He looks up. Looks at the other diggers, who have turned curiously towards him. Looks beyond them, and sees the flat expanse of land stretching towards the horizon. The lair, looming like a distant mountain against the sky.
And he realizes, with a rush of his elation, that his journey has reached its end.
That he’s found his flower field—and the clan he belongs to—at last.
