"I don't need your help, and I don't want it either!
...But Dog likes pets, so give me 5 bucks and I'll let you pet her."

___________________________________________

Mylo is a young boy, made to grow fast in a world that won't let you live too comfortably. After the fall of a majority of the city-states that dotted the landscape in the wake of the Beginning, Mylo's family sought refuge among a small few that sought to eke out an existence in an old farming town. Mylo himself was born here, raised by his parents until they died in a house fire, and little Mylo was forced to grow up fast.

The rest of the town fell to the Fears soon after, and what few survivors remained disbanded, each searching for their own fortune in this new world. Mylo followed an elderly man who helped him learn a firearm before he too was killed in an accident involving a set of old explosives. Then he followed a young man who didn't mind his company. Then he was alone.

"Have you figured out what to name her?"

Mylo looks up from where he'd been fiddling with a dandelion, his fingertips sticky with the juices of the ripped stem. This field was full of dandelions, and full of flowers of all kinds of shapes and colors that he almost wished he knew how to press flowers to keep them preserved forever. The grass poked and prodded at his bare ankles, and he couldn't resist the urge to scratch at them again. His cargo pants protected the rest of his legs from the itchy plants, but he was starting to grow taller, and soon his pants wouldn't fit him anymore.

The sun was climbing higher with each passing hour. By now it had to be around eleven o'clock. the sky was mostly clear with a few clouds here and there, and a blessedly warm breeze flows through the valley, a welcome respite from the weeks of biting cold. They'd barely even gotten any snow for their troubles. The world had simply been arid and lifeless, the ground brown with dead plant matter and the animals having all left for greener pastures. It'd been a harsh few months.

Mylo shakes his head and focuses on Michael's curious look. The older boy - or man, really, but he still had a sort of boyish look to him - was standing over Mylo with his arms crossed and an eyebrow cocked upwards, his hair short and choppy from where he'd recently taken a pair of scissors to the once shoulder-length locks. Mylo frowns up at him. "What do you mean?"

Michael nods to where the dog they'd found rummaging through empty dumpsters is now rolling around in the grass, playfully crushing flowers with her body. "If you want to keep her, you really ought to name her," he says, giving Mylo an almost chiding glance.

Mylo frowns. "Do I have to? Mom used to say I shouldn't name stray dogs." And the dog was definitely a stray. There was no collar and no sign of any person having taken care of the scruffy ball of fur. They were forced to dunk the mutt in the river for a good while to get rid of all the dirt and muck.

"You don't name it if you don't want it to follow you around," Michael corrects. "And you want her to follow you around, right?"

Mylo hums and looks over at the dog, plopping his chin on his hand. Did he want her to follow them? They'd have to feed her. Food was hard enough to find as it was, and adding another hungry mouth probably wasn't smart. And Mylos didn't know how to take care of a dog. He'd never had a dog. What did dogs eat? The mutt had sharp teeth, so meat? But Mylo wasn't good at hunting. How was he supposed to feed her?

The dog looks over at where the two humans are deciding her fate and barks, her tail wagging behind her.

Mylo groans and flops backward onto the itchy grass. "This is hard," he complains.

"What, finding a name?" Michael look back at the dog. "That's easy. You could name her Spot, or Belle, I once knew a dog named Maya..."

"No," Mylo frowns up at the cloudless sky. "I mean I don't know if I want her. What if she poops everywhere?"
