It began as the Ancients arose. A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality. After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory. Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real. A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet. They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own. Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it. The question now is… will they? |

When the hatchling was brought into the Lair for the first time, the Lumenstar Clan’s fear of these… dreamers, strange dragons with dream magic, was instantly dispelled. Skaia was a joy to have around, and had such beautiful colors. Lumenstar was no stranger to uniquely powerful dragons, even other dragons who had power over dreams. Skaia found himself right at home, his dream magic making him fast friends with the hatchlings his age. The hatchlings' nightmares turned sweet after his arrival, and Skaia was more than happy to bring smiles to their faces. When he grew up and entered the Lair as a fully grown dragon, Skaia didn’t lose any of his magic. Dragons who used to toss and turn in the night could be heard laughing in their sleep. As ominous as it sounded to the more nocturnal of Lumenstar’s members, the Clan benefited greatly from sound sleep. |

Skaia’s central ability is that of entering other dragon’s dreams when he himself is asleep. He simply thinks of a dragon, and he will manifest in their dreams, his magic allowing him to take control of it and change its course. Raging fires become beautiful gemstones, terrifying monsters are revealed to be tricks of the light. Night becomes day and day becomes night, whatever would make his host dragon the most comfortable. Dreams of a lost home that don’t sting with thoughts of loss, but are sweet with nostalgia. Nightmares of abandonment become visions of perseverance and finding one’s way home. Beyond this, Skaia’s reputation as such a powerful dragon have caused Lumenstar’s dreams to become more pleasant without his direct involvement. For example, were a dragon to dream of Skaia, they would assume he was truly there, and the dragon would no longer be afraid, even if Skaia was actually somewhere else entirely. In short, Skaia has become such a beacon of peace that the thought of him is often enough to dispel nightmares. |
