Pacific heard the first whistle blow, and he needed to hurry. The aqua Spiral twisted and darted through the town of Cinderslag, his mask protecting his lungs from the intense heat and smoke. His pale blue eyes were round as he looked left and right, up and down.
“Merri?” he called out as he flew frantically. “Merriweather?!”
Soon he spotted a silver Tundra with cream wings, and he rushed over to her. She was standing with another Spiral, who bore an unnerving smile...
“MERRI,” Pacific exclaimed, landing beside them and startling Merriweather. The other Spiral only looked intrigued.
“Pacific?” Merri wondered, eyeing him with surprise. “What are you doing here? I thought you hated it here.”
Pacific then turned his big eyes to the huge train they were near, and his eyes widened even more. “Are you STILL working on that death-trap?!” he screeched. “Don't you know it's haunted?!” he hissed in horror.
Merri smiled to him warmly. “Actually—”
But he zipped closer to her and grabbed her shoulders. “Because I can get you out of here,” he hissed with urgency now.
“If you and I are done here,” the other Spiral said to Merri with a stretching smile, “I can get out of your hair...”
Merri glanced from him to Pacific again. “I was going to say that I was just sending the Ashfall on its way to its final destination tonight. I found somedrake else to take over for me.”
Pacific's eyes turned to saucers. “You mean—!”
Another whistle blew and startled him.
Merri smiled mostly to herself now. “And you're right. All this smoke is getting in my fur, and...it is stuffy here,” she paused to feign a cough. “I'm just finishing with Aster first. What was the purpose of your travel?” she asked the pink Spiral, raising one brow.
Aster smiled with all of his teeth when he answered her.
“Oh, just research...”

...
Aster waited for Pacific and Merriweather to leave, and he nearly laughed out loud before stopping himself. He boarded the Ashfall and shut the doors as the train began to chug along the tracks. That was much easier than he'd been expecting, and how lucky.
But one thing still irked him. After all this time, he still had no control over his elusive magic, it just came whenever it pleased in massive bursts, and vanished without any warning. This power had just transported his two test subjects and himself to the railways of Cinderslag, and when he'd been about to board before Merriweather stopped him for questioning, she hadn't thought to check any of the cars.
She had no idea. Nodrake did.
The Ashfall's whistle blew again, and it chugged faster. Aster turned to enter one of the rooms in the car, expecting to see his test subjects inside waiting for him—
—but they were gone.

...
As the Ashfall chugged faster along the tracks through the hot tunnels, two dragons were racing along the roofs of the train cars. Horatia kept talking to Lumen, guiding him with her voice as she did her best to bellow over the chugging of the train. When she reached the next car, she leapt across, clearing the gap. She was about to call to Lumen to follow, when something two cars behind them made her heart stop.
A pink shape was worming its way towards them, eyes crazed and fangs bared in a smile.
Aster.
“Where do you think you two are going?” the Spiral trilled, wriggling closer.
Lumen yelped when he heard his voice, flinching so violently he nearly slipped. “Horatia?!” he called out desperately, shaking.
Horatia's heart hammered. If Lumen flew over to her now while he was panicked, he might not make it. And they had to deal with Aster...
“Just stay there!” she called back, preparing to leap back over.
“WHAT?!”
Horatia launched back across the gap, and rushed to place herself between Lumen and Aster. Her pale eyes sparked with fury as she stared the pink Spiral down with defiance.
“Come back to offer yourself up, my dear?” Aster cackled, leaping onto the same car.
“Not exactly,” she answered as thick black oil began covering her long mane and delicate wings.
“Horatia,” Lumen's voice quaked, “where is he?!”
“Just stay where you are!” she ordered.
Maniacal laughter erupted from Aster as he stalked even closer. It would be impossible for her to hypnotize him now! Her wings were completely covered in sludge.
“You think you can save him?” he taunted. “You couldn't even save your own family! Did you know you scream in your sleep? Begging to get your mate back? He screams in his sleep, too,” he added with an insane giggle, nodding to Lumen, “about his mate...Maple...such desperate souls you both are...”
He launched forward, claws outstretched—
—and Horatia whipped tendrils of oil towards him, entangling the mad Spiral. She glanced behind her to check on Lumen, when she saw a squat stalactite come rushing up as the train sped on through the winding tunnel.
“Lumen! DUCK!” she warned, and the Wildclaw flattened his body to the roof of the car.
In her distraction, Aster's claws suddenly glowed bright yellow and his magic sliced through the sludgy bonds, freeing him. He licked his lips and charged again, leaping over her and onto Lumen's back.
The feathered Wildclaw squawked in terror and spun in all directions, trying to shake Aster off. The Spiral twisted his entire body and tail around Lumen, limiting the other dragon's movements as Lumen frantically fought back.
Horatia shot more oily tendrils at Aster, pulling him and Lumen away from the edge of the car. She thickened the bonds as the Ashfall roared out of the tunnel and along a steep cliff. When she dared to glance down, smoke blocked any view of what lay below.
Lumen swung his neck around and caught one of Aster's wings with his teeth, biting down hard on leathery flesh. Aster screamed in pain and struggled against his bonds, but he could barely move now, and shock flashed across his face.
He wasn't smiling anymore.
With one swift and calculated jerk of her arms, Horatia untangled Aster and pulled him off of Lumen. The pink Spiral was a blur as he was sent flying off over the edge of the cliff, flapping his wings uselessly as he disappeared through the smoke.
“Are you okay?” Horatia called to Lumen as he stumbled. She helped steady him as he struggled to stand, leaning on his wooden cane and favouring his injured leg.
“I'm fine,” he lied, hissing and wincing in pain. “Is he...dead?”
Horatia hesitated, unsure how to answer. She saw Aster vanish below the steep cliff and into the smoke, but since she didn't know what was below. Jagged rocks or lava? Could he have survived his fall? Or did he perish?
The Ashfall rounded another corner and started to slow, whistling again. Through thinning clouds of steam and smoke, Horatia spotted a seaside town in the distance to their right.
Churnscar Wharf.
“He's gone now,” she finally answered over the chugging of the train. They didn't need to worry about Aster anymore. I hope...
Lumen's entire body sagged with relief. Horatia inspected the Wildclaw's leg again, and he flinched. She wasn't certain if her power would be enough to completely heal his leg, but she gently wrapped some of the oil around it to help ease some pain. But what he needed was serious medical attention.
“You're going to be fine,” she told him, trying to hide the quivering in her voice. “I'm getting you to a doctor,” she vowed as they both prepared to get off the train.
