Lumen, Part 1, Volume III
???

Continued from the Celosia Part 1

Churnscar Wharf...

As the evening sun began to sink in the Sea, Horatia scanned the seaside town as dragons started closing their doors for the night. As she guided Lumen, she begged the other dragons they passed by to aid the injured and limping Wildclaw, but they were only turned away or ignored. And despite Lumen's injuries and exhaustion, he flinched at every new voice that wasn't Horatia's.

Her hope began to sink with the setting sun, and anger burned in her heart. Why would nodrake help them?

“You two need assistance?”

Lumen jumped at another voice and Horatia turned to see who had spoken. A dark Spiral lifted his goggles and peered at them curiously with octopus eyes. He donned sailor's gear and a bright parrot was perched on one shoulder.

Horatia's heart fluttered as hope returned and she gradually led Lumen towards him. “Please,” she begged the Spiral, “my friend needs a doctor.”

The Spiral eyed Lumen with some concern before he answered. “I know the best doctors in all the Thousand Currents. The captain can take you both to see them.”

They followed him to the docks, and he introduced himself as Whelk. When they reached the docks, Whelk's parrot squawked “Fishstick!” as the three dragons strode up onto the ship.

“Whelk!” another voice barked as they boarded, and their attention turned to an orange Spiral standing at the wheel.

“Aye, cap'n?” Whelk called back.

“Yer aware we cannot accept any more customers tonight?” the captain reminded him, gripping the ship's wheel with more arms. “We're not making any more stops after reaching the isle.”

“These dragons need to see Alyss and Aura,” Whelk explained. “One of 'em's hurt bad, and they'll need to spend the night, at least.”

The orange Spiral looked them over, and Horatia could see he, too, had the same octopus eyes as Whelk. She prayed the captain show mercy so Lumen could get the help he needed, and the Wildclaw trembled as the silence dragged on.

“Very well,” the captain finally answered.

...

The crew of the Crimson Gull scurried about as the ship sailed on her way. Horatia sat with Lumen by some barrels as the wind ruffled feather and mane. Horatia soothed him with soft words, and his trembling ceased the more she spoke.

“Aster can't hurt you anymore,” she told him as she gently took one of his shaking paws in hers. “We'll get you to the doctors and you'll be with your family again soon.”

Lumen's crest feathers flattened as he began to relax, and he sighed. “I miss them all so much,” he whispered. “I...I don't know how long I've been gone...I just want them back, more than anything...”

Horatia's eyes stung as she thought of her mate and son. Her heart broke as she wondered if she would ever truly see them again.

“Is it true?” Lumen asked quietly. “The dragon Thimbleweed you spoke of...did he...”

Fury burned in Horatia, but she kept her voice even when she answered. “He took them away from me...he stole their souls...” she choked, “and when I went to get help, I was taken by Aster, and then there was darkness...” A single tear slipped down her face, and her voice hardened. “I will see them again, no matter what it takes...”

They spent the rest of the voyage in each other's company and silence. The farther the ship ferried them, the darker the sky grew, and the more stars Horatia saw twinkling above, and she told Lumen how beautiful they were.

Soon, she could see an island just ahead. Even through the dark, it was hard to miss the huge castle that ruled there, and some of the windows still glowed like the stars.

“Welcome to Seaside Island,” Captain Octavius announced.

...

Horatia now waited with Lumen in the doctor's office. The Wildclaw's crest stood straight up again and the rest of his feathers were puffed out all over his body as he lay frozen stiff on the examination table, his heart hammering against his ribs.

“You're going to be just fine,” he heard Horatia's gentle voice. “They will help you and you'll get to go home once you're better,” she promised.

Lumen gulped and nodded, relaxing only slightly. The door opened, and he flinched at the sound.

“Thank you so much, doctor,” Horatia said as a Spiral entered the room, and he closed the door behind him with a soft click. She noticed the exhausted look in his eyes as he trudged to one of the smaller tables. “I'm sorry if it's late, but my friend really needed your help,” she added.

“It's no trouble...” the Spiral, Alyss answered quietly with a small smile. “So what's the problem?” he questioned, looking over the nervous Wildclaw.

“Lumen's eyes were taken and the wound needs to be cleaned. And we think his left leg is broken. Nodrake at Churnscar Wharf would help, so we were brought here to see you.”

“I see,” Alyss said, stepping closer to examine Lumen.

Lumen heard him approaching and suddenly shot off of the examination table, startling the other dragons. “What's he doing?!” the feathered drake squawked in alarm, ignoring the pain and stumbling away.

“Lumen—” Horatia started, but he wasn't listening now.

“I can't be here!” he shrieked, snapping his wings open and knocking glass jars off the shelves as he panicked and spun around as is searching for an escape.

Alyss watched horrified as medicine jars smashed to the floor one by one. He rushed to another table and reached for a syringe already filled with a blue liquid, and he advanced on Lumen.

“Lumen,” the doctor said, his own voice beginning to shake (from anger or fear, Horatia couldn't tell), “you need to calm down—”

“What's in that needle?” Horatia asked as she fluttered over to Lumen.

“NEEDLE?!” the Wildclaw squawked again, flapping his wings and knocking Horatia aside with the breeze they left. Lumen listened for Alyss again and he bounded across the room despite the agony in his leg, and more jars smashed on the floor in his hysteria.

“It's a blue entoloma sedative,” Alyss explained as he raised his voice and tried to catch Lumen. His agitation grew the more the Wildclaw darted away just out of reach. “It'll help you sleep while I operate—”

Lumen could hear it now...that mad giggling...

“Why don't you take a nice long sleep, my friend...”

He could see Aster's crazed eyes and stretching smile...

“Operate?” Lumen's voice quaked.

“They say the eyes are the windows to the soul...I'll need to remove them if I'm going to find your soul...”

“Lumen,” Alyss repeated, almost through gritted teeth, “would you please—”

“—keep your eyes open for me?”

“STAY AWAY FROM ME!”
Lumen shrieked in terror.

“—STAY STILL!” Alyss bellowed.

“Alyss...”

The three dragons froze when another voice spoke the doctor's name. A tattooed Pearlcatcher now stood in the doorway and she locked her ruby-red eyes onto Alyss' green.

“That's enough,” she said softly, stepping towards him.

“Aura...I...” Alyss struggled for words as he began to realize what he did. He never lost his temper, especially not with his patients. “I'm so sorry,” he apologized to Lumen and Horatia, his voice choking. “I-I don't know what...”

“You should rest,” Aura hushed to him. “Ophelia and Twig need you now. I can take over from here.”

Alyss didn't know what to say for several moments. Aura gently took the syringe from his shaking claws as a single tear slipped down his face. She whispered reassurance to him, and Alyss murmured more apologies before finally darting out of the office.

“I'm so sorry about this,” Horatia said to Aura as she took Lumen's paw again and led him back to the examination table. “Lumen, I promise nodrake here is going to hurt you,” she reassured him.

“I...I just—” Lumen started, unable to explain. “I didn't mean to—”

“It's not your fault,” Aura told them both as she inspected the syringe of liquid blue entoloma. Satisfied with its contents, she gradually made her way over to the two dragons as she spoke more. “It's been hard for us all these past two days, especially for Alyss and his family.”

Horatia remembered what Alyss had said when the Spiral realized that he'd snapped. “He's not always like that, is he?” she wondered.

“No,” Aura almost whispered. “He just lost his daughter.”

Lumen and Horatia felt their hearts breaking again, and they thought of their own families. “I'm so sorry,” Lumen told her, his trembling beginning to cease again.

“You didn't know,” Aura reassured him.

“We got...separated from our own families,” he added.

“I'm sorry to hear that,” Aura hushed. “But you'll be safe here while you heal.”

“Horatia and I—OW!” the Wildclaw squawked as he felt a sharp stab in his shoulder and he launched off the table again. Soon his mind started to swim and his legs shook as he grew weak, struggling to stay on his feet. “What...what's happening...no...” his own voice grew distant, and his legs finally gave way and he collapsed to the floor, barely feeling his fall.

“Horatia...” he whispered weakly and tried to reach out with one paw. Soon he had no strength left, and sleep claimed him.

...

He jolted awake, his heart thundering in his chest as he sat straight up. He found himself on something softer than the examination table, and a familiar voice greeted him.

“Take it easy,” Horatia's voice soothed, taking his paw.

“Wh-where am I? What happened?”

“After Aura fixed your leg, you were brought to your own room to heal and rest,” she explained. “It's the middle of the night now, but Octavius agreed to take you home in the morning. Aura said you'll be well enough by then.”

His heart soared with hope. His soul ached for Maple and their children. He lifted one paw to his face, and his heart sank when he felt it was still bandaged. He would never see their faces again...

“There's one more thing,” Horatia said, reaching for the bandage. Carefully, she began to unwrap it, and her pale eyes met his bright crimson for the first time.

Lumen stared in utter disbelief as she smiled to him warmly. He directed his gaze around the dimly lit room and finally to his leg. It was wrapped in a sweet-smelling bandage, and when he tried to move it, there was no more pain. He sent Horatia an astonished look, and she seemed to know what his eyes were asking.

“It would've been too painful for you if I'd fixed your eyes while you were awake,” she told him, “so I regrew them while you were out.”

Tears slipped from Lumen's new eyes as he gazed to her. “Thank you,” he choked. “If there's anything I can do to help you...”

Horatia shook her head and smiled sadly. “What you need to do is rest. Your family will be so happy to see you again.”

“What about your family? Can anydrake help you free them?”

“It may be too dangerous,” Horatia said, struggling to keep her voice from choking. “I know some who could, but I fear convincing them will be impossible.”

“Who?” Lumen asked with a whisper.

Horatia didn't answer at first, her stomach knotting. When she found her voice again, it was soft.

“The Undertides.”

...

The following morning, Lumen awoke with a start to warm sunlight streaming through the curtains. When he remembered where he was, he sighed and relaxed. Sitting up in his bed, he glanced around the room, his feathered crest rising, expecting to see Horatia still with him.

But she was nowhere in sight, and his crest fell.

Donning his new robes, Lumen exited his room and made his way down the hall towards the grand staircase leading to the castle's main foyer, using the gnarled wooden cane that Horatia had given him to help steady his steps. He was invited to breakfast in the main hall, and he ate little, but enough to get his strength up.

Once he had eaten what he could, Octavius lead him out of the castle and to the docks, where the crew of the Gull awaited to bring him back home to the Zephyr Steppes, where his family was waiting for him. With a heavy but eager heart, Lumen boarded the massive ship, and they soon sailed off across the vast Sea, and the island began to shrink as they left it behind...

...

From the shores of the Seaside Isle, Horatia watched as the Crimson Gull carried Lumen away. The wind beckoned to her, billowing her mane and she turned to face south, towards the Shifting Expanse, where the monster who stole her family from her resided.

She drew in a determined breath, bracing for what she had to do. To the Undertides she would go.

And Thimbleweed would pay.

...

Hours passed as the Gull sailed on. In the distance, Lumen began to see the familiar cliffs of the Zephyr Steppes, and his heart soared. It wasn't much longer before the ship finally docked, and before Captain Octavius or his crew could speak first, Lumen shot ahead through the bamboo forests. He raced down paths he remembered and past the clearest streams. He suddenly skidded to a halt at the edge of the forest, staring at what he thought he'd never see again.

Maple saw him, too, and she froze, gazing to him as if she couldn't believe her eyes. Lumen took the first step towards her, and they both rushed to each other, tears streaming down their faces as they embraced tightly.

“I thought I'd never see you again...” Maple wept into Lumen's feathers as she trembled.

“I'm here now,” he hushed back, wrapping his own shaking wings around her. “I missed you all so much...”

Maple suddenly pulled away from his embrace and locked her ruby-red eyes onto his, fresh tears still streaking her own feathers. “Lumen...there's something I—”

He looked around, hoping to see their children's faces again. “Where are Lari and Dale?” he asked her quietly, hearing the distress in her voice.

Maple didn't know how to answer at first. When she found her voice again, she choked, “Lari's missing...I can't find her anywhere...”

Lumen thought his heart stopped, and his own voice sounded faraway when he answered, “What...”

“And Dale's gone too...”

To be continued...

Shed Orange Scale
Among dragons there is a condition that some are born with that limits scale growth. These dragons have few to no scales and are quite vulnerable with exposed skin. In some places of Sornieth many of these dragons will gather together to make a clan. Unfortunately this means the gene is almost guaranteed to be passed down to their offspring, but it does also offer a bit of safety in numbers as well as understanding.
