indentTesla is an extremely skilled inventor, who was once head of R&D of the Energy department, overlooking the search for an alternative power source to sate the ever increasing demand of the Expanse. Through her hard work, she discovered that electricity and magical energy are similar enough that the most efficient and plentiful source of power should be the leylines on which the Stormcatch Sanctum was built. However, being fully aware of the importance of this flow in energy, she recommended using it strictly as a supplemental source, if and only if the Occulus of the Eleven deemed this a safe move. Her unwillingness to greenlight the construction of the Source led to her being reassigned to Power Research & Development, or P.D. R&D as the first action taken by the then newly assigned department chief engineer, Craklinne.

indentMuch of the research she did also theoretically proved that using sacridite in batteries could revolutionize power storage, so Tesla begrudgingly moved her research to the Wiretangle Walk. Eventually, when she hit a wall with the efficiency of the new designs, she struck up a conversation with one of her coworkers, a belligerent Mirror named Diode who worked in construction. He mentioned off-hand that a gel suspension of sacridite grinded to dust in order to increase the surface area would decrease charging time and allow for more efficient use of space. Tesla was struck by the breakthrough, and demanded he apply for and R&D position alongside her. They quickly became partners in work, and soon also life, and founded a clan on the edge of the expanse.

Tesla’s right fins drooped, ever so slightly. “Sorry?”

“You’re being reassigned to Power,” Craklinne stated. “I’m sorry to see you go, of course, but I think it’ll suit you.”

indentShe was stunned. This was completely out of left field. Years and years of dedicated research in the Department of Energy, only to have her life uprooted so suddenly. She gulped, mouth dry. “What’s this about?”

What did she know? Sacridite was a good battery. The problem was that it had an astronomical charging time. How do you decrease charging times? By increasing the current. How do you increase the current? Either by increasing the voltage– not an option at this scale, it’d be too unsafe– or reducing the resistance. How do you reduce resistance? You can decrease the temperature (too steep an energy cost), you can increase the cross section of the wires (not practical), or you can change the material (obviously not). So what was left? →
