Kali

Legends told of a race of great black spirits that stood guard over holy places, protecting them from harm in the form of a great black dog. Such stories held great sway in rural areas over dragon and Beastclan alike. So, when a massive black Gaoler with a touch of shapeshifting ability came sniffing around looking for a job, Clan leadership saw it as a golden opportunity. She and the pack of wolves she leads got put to work almost immediately. Her job is part ranger, part scout, and part scarecrow: patrolling the Clan's borders, reporting anything strange, and looking like a Grim so that any would-be invaders stay away.

The funny thing was, the Clan wasn't entirely off the mark when they worked out her disguise. Kali's father is a spirit of death bound to the skeleton of a dragon, and her mother is, in effect, a grim reaper. When she chooses to use her gifts, Kali's very being radiates a kind of eerie inevitability that most beings interpret as malevolence. She wasn't far off from a church grim, when one thought about it.

That wasn't what she wanted to define her. As a young... whatever she'd initially been... Kali trained her skills in self-defense just like her siblings. But there was a curiosity in her that absolutely could not be sated. She couldn't help but believe that there was something more interesting beyond the void into which she was born. Reality, flesh and bone, held the same lure for her that had led so many flesh and bone dragons into her clutches. Her journey toward the light played out exactly backwards of those lost souls. It was... difficult... at first. But eventually, she learned to wrap herself in a body, and became comfortable in skin. The warmth of flesh, the sturdiness of bone, the gentle rhythm of a heartbeat and squirmy gurgle of a GI tract, all made her feel cozy. For a being who'd been effectively "all soul," the comfort of having a sturdy forever-home outweighed any limitations a body might bring. And so, she took the form of a Gaoler: sturdy, cozy, warm, and immense.

She has a surprising amount of friends in those who can see past their instincts to avoid death: in particular, powerful mages and extremely blessed things tend to find Kali agreeable company. In particular, one gentleman whose soul had been poured into his egg by a deity seemed to pay her special attention. He worked as a night watchman, but her other friends seemed extremely surprised at how much time Auroros spent with her. Kali found him a lovely conversationalist, but apparently he almost never took the time to speak with anyone. Strange.
