Lancet, Anesthetist

Lancet was one of the first to join Galen in building the new College of Surgeons. He mostly keeps to himself and seems to operate on a different timetable than everyone else. He has never missed a meeting, but he tends to arrive fashionably late. Sometimes he slips in so quietly it takes a while for anyone to notice. Not precisely a night owl, he eschews both midday and midnight, preferring twilight and dawn.

No one knows much about his past. He is a dragon of few words. When he does speak, he always has some insight to offer, but personal questions roll off him like water. How did he get his scars? What's under the mask? He won't say. He just stares for a moment and walks away.

Even his mate, Teasel, can only shrug when people ask her about him. She was drawn to him due to his dreams. Her familial gift allows her to see other dragons' dreams, though not to influence them; instead, she paints the images that appear in her mind's eye. It was a surprise to everyone when Lancet invited her to paint his dreams, and an even bigger surprise (though no one would admit it) when the images turned out to be beautiful. Of course, they were also incomprehensible, as all dreams are to anyone besides the dreamer.

To his patients, Lancet is a calm, quiet shadow in the background. His anesthetic mists carry subtle scents to make the steep slide into unconsciousness as pleasant as possible, and he is always there to make sure the dragons under his care wake up without pain.

The Surgeons’ Oath

“I, Lancet, swear by the Shadowbinder and call all the gods and goddesses to witness, that I will observe and keep this oath, to the utmost of my power and judgement. I will teach my art without reward or agreement, and impart my knowledge to all of those who are to follow. I will remember that medicine is both a science as well as an art and that sympathy and understanding may outweigh procedures and drugs. I will not be ashamed to admit when there is something I do not know or understand, and I shall call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed.

“I shall tread with care in the matters of life and death. It may be within my power to save or take a life, but above all, I must not play at God. I will prevent disease wherever I can. And if I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected and remembered hereafter.”
