Biography
Patriarch
Persona Pneuma enters company in the way of a beleaguered scholar. His weary smile and dour turn of phrase that make him seem he is quietly harboring a pessimistic philosophy about life that he intends to subtly infect into those he speaks with. His seemingly gentle reason and and unpresuming friendliness make him affable and often gives him the role of arbiter and voice of reason when a dispute is at hand. Behind this calm facade, however, he is cunningly manipulative, and transforms into a critical and demanding commander of his flight's fighting force. Background Long ago, a pale, dark-winged dragon hatched alone in an immense, dank cave. The skittering insects and shadowy fish in the shallow pools within nourished the dragon's body. The echoing drip-drops of water sang songs to it, and the illumination of glowing fungi dotting the labyrinthine network of tunnels that was its home. However, nothing shimmered so brightly or sang so well as the Sundered Orb that rested in the main cavern. Many years passed, and Pneuma grew into adulthood before one of the upper tunnels collapsed and allowed prey and a different sort of darkness to enter his caves. Driven by curiosity, he found a strange world above - one as shadowy as his home but rife with life and diversity. Exploring the dark world and stretching his wings for the first time, Pneuma lived well, but savagely. Word spread of a wild, secretive dragon that lurked in a foul corner of the tangled wood, one that never spoke and attacked other dragons on sight. Some even suppose the bestial thing ate its victims. Few came to fight the rouge guardian, but many more shied away from the place until a skydancer named Tinge arrived. Tinge was no warrior, and Pneuma knew almost no language from his solitary life, but an alliance was somehow forged. Even Tinge would never be able to guess why, but Pneuma knew it was because the Sundered Orb hidden in the earth below had changed somehow. It was no longer a pillar of strength that merely existed, but a thing of power that wanted, and what it wanted now was more. Since that day, Pneuma's clan grew first from a collection of outcasts and radicals into something stronger that has survived both war and reformation. Derangement Pneuma believes that the Sundered Orb his egg was hatched next to speaks to him. It does not speak to him in words - since it has communicated with him long before he knew language - but it does give him strong impressions of its intentions and power. He guards the orb zealously, and even Tinge - his closest friend - does not know of the location of the hidden entrance that leads to the cavern it resides in. |

Why do we live in the darkness? What meaning is there to owing our identity to a mere lack of light? Because the shadows are not nothing. They are not like the emptiness of the void. Knowing we are each imperfect, the darkness strengthens our imbalances, obscuring what we lack and allowing our advantages to become strengths. The endless night is a freedom from the judgement of others and a mask that allows us to always be precisely who we are. Without the persecution of the Light, our only truth is this freedom, this beauty allowed us by the Shadowbinder. Even obscured in the one darkness, we are many and few, strong and sickly, selfish and cherishing. We are rife with possibility and exactly our own true nature, and we stand against against the Light as much as for ourselves.
