Kya's Crew | he/him
Personality: Julian is a bard—a performer through-and-through. His flair for theatrics and the dramatic make him very much at home on a stage or in front of a crowd, although they also tend to get him into trouble (or, sometimes, out of it). He plays sixteen different instruments, sings, and writes his own music and poetry. He joined Kya’s crew not because he had any particular interest in being a pirate, but because it gave him the opportunity to travel the world, see its sights, meet new people, and get inspiration for his music. (...Or at least, that’s the story he tells. The truth has a lot more to do with the free food and lodging, considering his spending habits and his inability to stop himself from buying new instruments, expensive food and drink, clothing, antiques, and other useless trinkets.) Kya, on her part, invited him on on the spot, liking his attitude and appreciating the idea of having some free entertainment for her crew on long ocean journeys. Backstory: Julian was born into a huge family—he’s the 13th of 17 siblings, and has countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and even more distant relatives. While he loved his family very much, he also grew up with a constant, nagging sense of loneliness and insecurity that he tried very hard to find, feeling like no one saw him for who he truly was, that he didn’t stand out, that he was just another one of those Coatl kids. This unmet desire for attention and validation led him to act out, sometimes getting into trouble with his antics, trying to make others laugh to feel better about himself. His family was part of a large clan, which Stellian and his mother and sister joined when Julian was an older hatchling. Julian was the closest to Stellian’s age, and so was immediately excited to get to know him and potentially have a friend who wasn’t a relative of his. But Stellian was not interested, repeatedly brushing Julian off in favor of reading on his own. Julian kept trying, but had no luck, and as they got older and Julian came to terms with the fact that Stellian didn’t want him around, it started to become a game where he tried to pester and irritate Stellian as much as he could. It was the only way he could get Stellian to pay attention to him, and it simultaneously let him express his irritation towards Stellian for his bad attitude. The two bickered constantly, until by the time they were adolescents going on young adults, they were infamous in the clan for their rivalry. At around that time, Stellian left the clan to get a higher education, which was the last time Julian saw him for around ten years. It wasn’t long later that Julian left as well. He made his living as a traveling musician for a few years, then joined Kya’s crew and sailed with them for about three years before they first found their way into Outcast land. Julian had no idea where Stellian had ended up, and Stellian had no idea where Julian had ended up, so they were both surprised—and not terribly pleased—to meet again after all these years, and to be forced to coexist for a while as the ship was repaired. At first they fought constantly, until both Cobalt and Kya agreed something had to be done, and forced them to be on the same work crews so they would be forced to work together. Little by little, the two started to mend their relationship, until eventually (to no one’s surprise but theirs) they were forced to confront the fact that they had feelings for each other. Now that the ship’s been repaired, Julian still spends most of his time sailing with Kya’s crew, but he always makes time to stay with the Outcasts periodically. |
