The Blacklight Project is a species that is sometimes described as having no gender. Because of the genetic modification of the species, gender has no role in breeding, and instead it's determined by rank and role. Genders technically exist, but are next to impossible for other species to differentiate.

The species is extraordinarily long lived and carries genetic memory to their offspring. They naturally regenerate all parts of themselves, basically giving them an indefinite lifespan barring mutation, injury, or illness that disrupts this.

They are capable of having multiple offspring at a time, with the higher ranked member of the partnership carrying the young. Aggression is heightened during the incubation, which completes in 3-4 weeks time. The time can be further reduced if food is plentiful.

Blacklight do not care for their young after birth, and the offspring are considered fully capable right away due to their genetic memory. They also reach adult size in around a years time.


Behavior:

Their spoken language is almost entirely within the ultrasonic or higher frequencies. Communication with other species is more often than not impossible in their language, and they cannot produce sounds from other languages.

The communicator gives the species a low guttural voice, lacking inflection. Some species mistake this for sounding aggressive or angry.

Translation of the Blacklight language is rough, with few literal translations, and a very blocky and direct manner of speech, often using few words. An example of this would be; Agreeing to do something, accepting what someone is saying, letting others know you are listening, agreeing with what is said, admitting for fault, consideration, and submitting to a superior all translate to the single word "Yes". Tone doesn't convey properly to other species either.

The entire species is naturally hyper aggressive. This is due to genetic modification and weaponization of the species. These aggressive instincts are nearly impossible to control. for most members of the species.

The Blacklight are not good at negotiating peacefully. They often resort to aggression, or threats in order to fulfil their interests. They are easily frustrated when negotiations aren't going the way they had planned, often leading to sudden declarations of war. They are often more tolerant of other members of their species, however.


Culture:

The Blacklight project are highly intelligent, and utilize the abandoned technology of the Eurian who lived on the planet before them. This technology helped jumpstart their development, which proved crucial to the species survival. Their long lifespans and genetic memory give them an extra edge in development and learning.

Their creators embedded each of the original Blacklight with a control collar that proved ineffective. Self replicating nano technology was augmented into the collar bone, and passes down to offspring. The collar hosts networks of nano technology which repair both mechanical and biological substances. As technology advanced, they learned to manipulate what the nano bots would target. Some ever turned theirs into targeted weapons. It also later served as a point for the communicators that developed much later in order to speak to other species. It emits sounds at much lower frequencies for other species to hear, but translation still proves challenging.

The species believes in strength above all. They expand their empire explosively, able to fully populate a planet within only a few years. They have a habit of helping weaker empires expand and get established, only to later wipe them out and steal the most valuable planets out from under them. They have also been known to entrap weaker species within their borders, and demand steep payment for peace.

When the Blacklight have expanded to enough territories in a section of space, they often split into smaller governments led by the highest ranking among them, a Fleet Commander. Fleet Commanders govern entire sectors in space, and all the ships and military within those sectors. They are allowed to expand their reach as much as they like, and govern however the deem necessary. These sectors also communicate with each other as if they are opposing nations, usually avoiding conflict with one another. Conflict does occur between sectors from time to time, but usually due to extreme disagreements, or territory respect issues.

They will often form their sectors around other advanced life, be it space faring, or just technologically aware. Any species within the sector that grows too advanced, or becomes too oppositional are eradicated completely. The planets are easily converted into Blacklight settlements.


Assorted Facts:

-The scream of a Blacklight can shatter glass, crystal, and give headaches to many biological lifeforms, even if they can't hear the sound. Sometimes it can even disrupt electronic wavelengths, and cause temporary loss of consciousness.

-Despite the species appearing to have no eyes, they see remarkably well. Their eyes are hidden, located near the base of the neck, near the collar bones. They do not appear to be eyes in the traditional understanding, but perceive and transfer light data the way our eyes would. The Blacklight see a much wider field of view than most species, and almost entirely behind them can detect motion.

- The face and nose of the species are flat to their face, and as a result biting was never one of the most effective ways the species fought. Their nose brings in scent particulate from the mouth and the environment in massive quantities. It gives them a strong understanding of what they are eating, and what is around them. It's also one of the few reasons the original 12 Blacklight did not attack eachother.

-The left leg of the species was spliced wrong, and is missing a joint. It causes most members of the species to exhibit a sort of limp when they move slowly. Despite this, the species is still very agile and fast.

-The wings of the Blacklight are powerful enough to propel them forward at high velocity, and to break falls or slow their descent. They cannot fly indefinitely, and prefer to be on the ground.

-Despite their great technological advances, many Blacklight still prefer to fight with their claws.

-The Blacklight are carnivorous, requiring meat to survive. In the short term, they can eat non protein sources for a time.

-The Blacklight drove all animal life on their home planet extinct, leaving behind a barren world with highly advanced technology.

-The Blacklight Project can to adapt to eating food from any planet or culture. This trait also prevents allergies and helps them fight illnesses on other worlds. This further allows them to adapt to any environment that supports life, and breathe in any atmosphere.

-They are often seen by other species as a vast and tyrannical empire. Most fear to stand up to them because of their history of aggression and eradication.

Species History: Creation
Known as the Blacklight Project, this species was bred for hyper aggression to be used in a war. The Eurian was the once highly advanced species that bred and modified them. The project backfired, and the 12 remaining Blacklight broke free of their containment and destroyed the labs that once held them. The aggression was unparalleled, and they rapidly wiped out all the Eurians who they could find. Fearing for their survival, a small group of Eurians abandoned their planet to colonize a new one. The unchecked Blacklight bred rapidly and took over the planet. They were fairly intelligent, but aggression overrode most of their logic. They nearly wiped out all animal life on the planet, forcing these carnivores to seek new food sources. A small number of them adapted to eating plantlife, and many of them resorted to scavenging. The population dropped sharply as food availability, and the smartest of them ended up surviving. They scavenged technology from the previous owners, and ended up advancing technologically. Eventually the species developed space travel, and moved away from their dying world.

Meeting other space faring life was challenging for them as a species. The highly advanced technology of their predecessors gave them a combat advantage, but they quickly found themselves suffering a language barrier. Their language occurred at a frequency above many other species ability to properly hear, if at all. Even if they could hear them, they often couldn't distinguish words, and certainly were unable to replicate them. Frustration grew from the lack of communication, and often led to battle. The species became conquerors, wiping other species out and replacing them as the dominant species on the planet. They had a special desire to fight scientists because of the painful experiments the original 12 ancestors experienced. The memories still existed in the species, through their genetic memory. Blacklight also had little to no genetics or medical research for a very long time.

Fleet Commander Sora:
Sora's warship is the most powerful out of all the fleets, and their age carries a great deal of weight and respect.

Sora is one of the founders, or the original 12 members of the species. Sora is also the only surviving founder to date.

Sora is more prone to attempt diplomatic solutions to problems than most others of their species. Because Sora is a Fleet Commander, the sector ruled by them is less territorial and aggressive. They are often found trading with other empires, which is an uncommon trait among the species. Blacklight usually conquer and take what they want, seeing little reason to trade when they can easily acquire something for free.

Sora is also the only member of the species known to have spent significant time on other planets, and learning the cultures of other species. Sora finds a great deal of enjoyment from trying the foods of other species.

Though gender means very little to their species, Sora will often go by feminine pronouns when addressing other species. Translation for this can remain somewhat unclear.
