Volcarona (Japanese: ウルガモス Ulgamoth) is a dual-type Bug/Fire Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Larvesta starting at level 59.

It appears to be distantly related to the Paradox Pokémon Slither Wing and Iron Moth.

Biology
Volcarona is a large, moth-like Pokémon with four small feet. It appears to have compound eyes that are two shades of blue, and there is a red horn-like structure on each side of its face. The fuzz on its upper body is smoky white and tangled. Its abdomen is black in the center and light blue with black dots on the outside. It has six leaf-like wings that are orange in color and have small black spots.

Volcarona releases burning scales from its wings to engulf the battlefield in a sea of fire. Volcarona's flames are said to provide a replacement for the sun when the atmosphere is dark with volcanic ash, and some legends claim that it hatched from a cocoon of raging flames to save people and Pokémon in freezing climates. It was feared as therage of the sun by ancient people, and it was even worshiped as a deity of fire in some places, they even referred to it as the embodiment of the sun. Volcarona's shrine in Relic Castle remains as a testament to the respect it commanded. Despite being worshiped in cold regions, it is unpopular in hot regions due to its burning body. Volcarona is also considered dangerous due to how it scatters hot burning scales, which can rob the surrounding air of its oxygen.

Slither Wing and Iron Moth bare a resemblance to Volcarona. Slither Wing is believed to be a revived ancestor of Volcarona. Iron Moth is believed to be Volcarona's descendant, possibly a UFO being controlled by alien life for observation.

Two special Volcarona are worshiped in Lental for being two of the seven guardian Illumina Pokémon. It resides in the Voluca Island Illumina Spot.

Prior to Generation IX, Volcarona was the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Fiery Dance.

Dex Entries
Black/Y/OR: When volcanic ash darkened the atmosphere, it is said that Volcarona's fire provided a replacement for the sun.
White/X/AS: A sea of fire engulfs the surroundings of their battles, since they use their six wings to scatter their ember scales.
BW2: Thought to be an embodiment of the sun, it appeared during a bitterly cold winter and saved Pokémon from freezing.
Ultra Sun: As it flies, it scatters its flaming scales. It was feared by ancient people, who referred to it as "the rage of the sun."
Ultra Moon: According to legends, it was hatched from a flaming cocoon to save people and Pokémon that were suffering from the cold.
Sword: Volcarona scatters burning scales. Some say it does this to start fires. Others say it's trying to rescue those that suffer in the cold.
Shield: This Pokémon emerges from a cocoon formed of raging flames. Ancient murals depict Volcarona as a deity of fire.
Scarlet: Its burning body causes it to be unpopular in hot parts of the world, but in cold ones, Volcarona is revered as an embodiment of the sun.
Violet: This Pokémon scatters burning scales. Most of the danger of these scales is not in their heat—it's in the way they rob the surrounding air of oxygen.

Origin
Volcarona is based on a moth, presumably the Atlas moth or cecropia moth—or possibly the promethea silkmoth, Prometheus being a Titan god of fire. Its concept may have also been derived from the phrase "like a moth to a flame", which refers to the observed positive phototaxis demonstrated by moths.

Its wings may be based on the petals of a tiger lily, having the same number of extensions, black spots, and red-orange coloring. It also has motifs of the sun, with the black spots on its wings representing the dark spots on the sun. Volcarona may also be based on solar deities. Volcarona's head and antennae bear a resemblance to the headpiece of Hathor, which depicts the horns of the goddess cradling a disk representing the sun in between.

In addition, Volcarona's appearance may be loosely based on a seraph, a type of angel that is often associated with fire, as its name literally translates to "burning one". Like Volcarona, seraphim are often depicted with six red wings and no legs.

Name origin
Volcarona may be a combination of volcano or Vulcan (Roman god of fire and volcanoes) and corona, referring to its Fire type and status as the Sun Pokémon.

Ulgamoth may be a combination of ウルカヌス Urukanusu (Vulcanus), 蛾 ga (moth), and moth.
