The Warden of the Lonely Tower | Barghest III | Witchkin IV
Okuri-inu origins

"So tell me, little wolf, do you want to punish those who have wronged you?"

They say it slept deep under the bowels of a ruined castle, far beyond the Crystal Reaches where no one dared to even travel close.

On moonless nights did it come out to hunt, to feed - on memories, on ghosts of those who once roamed the castle, granting them no peace as it rended at their ethereal bodies.

No one knew its name, but only as the Beast of the Lonely Tower, taking with it the the last vestiges of light it ever saw as it slunk back into the shades from whence it came.
Bright were its eyes, but the light still stung, as it always have. It reared away from the brightness, hissing and spitting, eager to get away from the ray that burnt its claws. The night offered much more reprieve, for it knew the place it prowled: the slashes on the blackened wall, the charred edges of cloth and ruined tapestries whose stories were lost to fire and time. And them. The ghosts that haunted the castle grounds, flitting about like discarded cloth; immaterial and opaque the next. And there were the eyes, scattered all around those crumbling walls, painted in such a dark shade.

It held them there, those eyes. Forever chained to the past, starving ravenously for the future. Where dragons thought that the Lonely Tower howled only with the hair-raising choruses of the dead's disquiet, the sound that emerged from between the beast's sharp teeth came out as a heart-rending lullaby.

Ghosts in the shade,
I hear your heartbeat clear
Your breaths rust in your chests,
it is all and only this I hear...
I vow your bloodied hands shall never touch again
For my life you have traded for this twisted end;
I am your long night,
Your never-ending link
Until my teeth tear, rend and sink
Your souls I will forever feast,
Ever starving, never ending,
Beware I, your immortal beast.

"A dragon! Over there!"
The whisper ripped through the silence like a blunt knife. The Beast licked its maw. It could hear the thumping heartbeats, erratic and trembling like a butterfly caught in a web. Night had set so long ago, and they could smell living flesh; just as overpowering as the dead's. It cast one more look against the eyes painted across the stalactites.
_______Tonight, they dripped tears of blood.

The Underdark mistress shuffles a deck of tarot cards as she hums out a rhyme for her children; both blessed and cursed by the moonlight. Their blood is imbued with the essence of both Witchborne and beast and they look up to their mother with glowing sulfurous eyes. The scent of burning brimstone accompanies their presence as they move seamlessly between the land of the living and that of the dead. Perhaps they find their calling escorting souls to the afterlife, or guarding those infernal gates of the underworld. Some call them the hounds of hell itself.

Regardless, the cards are drawn from the deck, reading the children’s fate beneath the moonlight.
