The entry is written in faded ink, a date scrawled at the top of the page next to a short title that reads “Angels”. It is the account of one Camellia Archer regarding a visit to the Ravenswood Monastery.

I never put much stock into superstitions. Many of the small clans that dotted the Hewn City were full of them. They spoke of emperors lurking beneath the earth and strange specters that haunted the shadows. They were nothing more than fairytales meant to frighten children, the kind of stories my parents told to keep me out of trouble.

You see, I’ve always been a bit overly inquisitive. When I first moved to the town of Ravenswood, it was as a writer. I had traveled to many towns prior, always seeking those folktales as inspiration for my stories. This town, in particular, was secretive and many of the drakes residing there were untrusting. Gradually, I began to hear the rumors.

At first, the stories were similar to those I’d heard elsewhere. Monsters lurking in the shadows. Strange misfortunes befalling those who wandered off into the woods. Yet, I began to hear more and more rumors about the town’s monastery.

It was a touchy subject with the townsfolk, each of them giving me a distrusting scowl followed by a warning, “you’d do best to stay away from that place”.

Of course, my curiosity got the better of me.

The Ravenswood Monastery sat atop a hill on the outskirts of the town. It had not been active for decades and it was a worn place of cracked stone stained darkly by ash. It was fall when I came, the trees already shedding their leaves and the grasses dried and brittle underfoot. There was a cemetery behind the monastery that trailed off into the woods, a small cottage marking the home of the groundskeeper. I thought that it too would be abandoned, but there was still a thin trail of smoke erupting from the chimney.

“Can I help you?” The voice startled me as it came from behind and I turned to find a dark Imperial staring at me with narrowed eyes. “It’s best you be going. Sundown is nearing and you wouldn’t want to be caught outside in the dark.”

“I’m here to see the monastery” I replied, to which the Imperial returned a skeptical glare. “Nothing to see there” he replied, although his voice had drawn into a faint whisper.

I waited until after dark, when I saw the light from the groundkeeper’s cottage go out and crept through the cemetery into the old monastery. The door was chained shut, but easily unlocked and I remember a flurry of leaves rush inside with a gust of wind as the oaken door creaked open. The inside was covered in ruined furniture, flayed carpet, and the scent of rot and decay. There were deep gouges in the floor and the walls appeared burned in places. I remember finding a length of silver chain, many of the links shattered upon the floor.

While I cannot say that I saw any monsters within the monastery, the floor boards creaked in such a way that I felt as if something were stalking me and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched.

I remember that when I left the monastery, a thick fog had settled over the grounds and as I stumbled through the cemetery there were a series of gravestones adorned with angels. I could have sworn that none of the gravestones had such figures on them earlier, but at first I thought it must have been a detail I overlooked.

Since then, however, I have been seeing those angels everywhere. It appears that they’ve been following me, perched in gift shops or staring down at me from the rooftops in town. Sometimes they are tiny figurines and other times behemoth statues, but always they are staring.

We attempted to follow up regarding Camilla Archer's report. We are certain that there have never been angel statues present in the cemetery behind the monastery, nor were any such figurines or statues present in any of the locations listed by Camilla in her account.

Camilla herself had reportedly moved away in search of more stories. . . but no additional tales were submitted to her publisher and we could not find any traces of her. No angels were discovered in her previous lodgings in Ravenswood, although several black feathers were found scattered upon the floor.
