about.
on the cliffs between the lanternlea port and the hewn city lies the rubble of a formerly grand city, known by the dragons who linger there as requiem. it stood as a guard between the mysterious beings who haunt the hewn city and the rest of the sunbeam ruins, a barrier around the priest of sun and stars, a library of forgotten knowledge, a coliseum of forbidden renown. when the emperor rose, travel diminished greatly. the priest of sun and stars and his closest lorekeepers were taken to the beacon of the radiant eye to be more closely guarded by their most luminous mother. the ruins of requiem felt more like ruins than they had in generations, the whispers of murmur and lament going unheard for months at a time. lethe was raised in the clerical order of shrine keepers in requiem, those who prepare offerings for requiem’s mysterious shrines and statues. these devout clerics take vows of silence that are said to enhance their powerful connection with the light. believed to be uniquely vulnerable to the shade due to their heightened magic, they emerge from the temple only by day, often accompanied by what few shade-eaters remain unshattered. lethe was young when luminax rose, but not so young that the loss of traders and tourists was not missed. the vows of silence in the temple felt somehow louder, more oppressive, than ever. lethe does aer best to stand it, for years, silent and dutiful, out of the temple the moment the sun rises and pushing aer luck until the sky completely darkens, until ae can resist the dark no longer. ae packs aer sparse belongings, packs aer bow and quiver, the incense aer mentorve has always harped on aer keeping lit. and leaves. she's gone for weeks. not a word to anyone. no one has seen her--not even the stone colossi at the old cobbled road into requiem, and the pair see all, which leaves only one grim option. lethe had entered the hewn city. a deadly pilgrimage, one which no one will follow her on. the order grieves--all silent and perfect in their grief. a small marble statue is carved in aer likeness, placed beside a pillar of the temple, a small incense holder to burn in aer memory. but she returns. found by a patrol along the outskirts. she is more wiry than before, but little else about her physically has changed. she dons dark, chitinous armor, but still carries the bow shaped for her in her youth. against sense and reason and fear her mother embraces her, tearful, ever silent. lethe, however, speaks. with a voice clear--not raspy as one would expect from a dragon who once vowed to never exercise it--and what she says leaves the order uneasy. "who are you?" |
