> he did find the source of the disease (and even created a kind of treatment!) but it was, alas, too late for him.
> he now wrestles with a jekyll and hyde situation where if his respiratory affliction acts up he's liable to have a seizure, lose control of himself, and wake up as a more beastlike version of himself that's overgrown with foliage to reflect the origin of his sickness.
> he wears the mask to help him breathe but if he gets over-excited or anxious and his heart rate increases he's more likely to shift.
> generally he'll turn back after his beast form has exhausted itself and he's passed out. then he'll wake up ravenous and with no recollections of anything he may have done.
