By all means, Goro Akechi is a dead man walking.

There are many reasons he shouldn't be here today; even from hatchlinghood, every day for him has been a struggle. His mother died before he well and truly knew what death was, the clans who took him in, who were supposed to care for him only saw him as a sob story, an easy way to gain clout and sympathy from others. When he made a contract with a demon, called upon it without so much as any idea of what the consequences should be, where Loki should've killed him where he stood, broke his mind, but didn't. Even when he clawed his way up and out of the dredges, presenting himself and his services to his father-Shido, playing along in order to get revenge on the dragon who, in Goro's eyes, killed his mother, is the reason his life has been such a strife, even when he thought everything was going perfectly, everything planned out to the T-

It just wasn't enough.

It had never been enough.

Shido knew him, knew his plans of revenge from the start, planned to get rid of him as soon as his services weren't needed anymore. After all, who needs an assassin- a pawn- that plans to stab you in the back? A potential stain on his reputation, a walking, breathing laundry list of all the wrongs you had others commit in your name?

All the blood on Goro's hands. All the lives ruined. Averything he did for the purpose of his revenge-

All for nothing. Because he was too blind to see that his father had manipulated him.

If there's anything Goro regrets, it's that much.

He doesn't regret killing the people he did, even if it was under Shido's commands. They were all miserable people, people who didn't deserve to live, who didn't deserve the riches they had. People who definitely didn't deserve the ones that cared about them, not in the slightest- Goro enjoyed killing them. Loved tearing through them with his claws, his fangs, calling upon forbidden powers to break their minds, make them kill themselves in their madness-

But, perhaps, he does regret the good people he hurt in doing so. The innocent people who never did anything wrong, but simply had the misfortune of being related to, or dependent on, the ones he killed or drove mad.

... Perhaps, most of all, he regrets that things ended the way they did.

Goro Akechi is a dead man walking. He should have died when he confronted the Phantom Thieves on Shido's cruiseship, the ones he betrayed in his father's name, but had tricked him in return. He fought them, seething mad, spitting venom and threatening death, and yet, when they defeated him, they offered him a place in the group, Ren Amamiya's eyes too gentle, too understanding, so much so that it made him want to scream. He didn't deserve that offer for so many reasons, but loathe as he is to admit it, he wanted to accept it, he wanted to, despite himself-

Shido's men got to him first. His sacrifice was supposed to help the thieves flee, a plea of revenge in his stead on his lips as the life left his eyes.

And yet. Here he is, today, parading as detective and assassin for Status Quo.

That Doc. Of course he'd be found, body still warm, still breathing but barely so, by a goddamn doctor. No- it doesn't matter what Doc insists. He's a doctor, or a healer of sorts, in any case. He did nurse Goro back to health. For what reasons? Hard to say. According to Doc, Goro was hissing and spitting curses at him when he was found, delirious and bleeding out, and Doc found himself... intrigued. That's what he tells Goro, at least.

Goro was brought into Status Quo under Doc's supervision; a place for him to stay while he recovered. He'd planned to leave as soon as he was capable of doing so, already tired of the snarky Honba within an hour of meeting, of Dave's constant jabbering, and of Skinner's creepy comments about his wings. This place is a goddamn nightmare, in Goro's humble (correct) opinion.

Except, he's still here. Recovered. Working for S.Q. Snarking back at Honba, teasing Ma-Ti about his gun obsession (and most definitely not nerding out alongside him), comparing kills with Bianca and Grant, seeing who had the most that week.

This place is a goddamn nightmare, but dammit, it's Goro's nightmare, and it was his choice to stay here. He decided that these dumb idiots weren't annoying enough to leave, that, hey, this job does pay pretty well, he can even afford to live away from the building. He can leave when he wants, can do whatever well he damn pleases.

Sometimes, he wonders. He thinks about the Phantom Thieves. About what he would say if they met again. If he met... Ren again. What would happen, if he sought them out again. Maybe he will someday. Maybe he won't.

He's fine for now. It's his life, and his choices. He has some regrets- even if they're probably not the ones he should have- he has issues up the wazoo, both in the physical and mental way, with a chaos god coursing through his veins, but it. Is. His. Life.

And he's in control.
