Or, well, that used to be the case. Thing is, Ren had a bit of a... run-in with a false deity. It wasn't pretty. Sure, they defeated it, but the aftermath left his- and his fellow thieves'- identities compromised. It needed to be done, Yaldabaoth was a danger to the dragons and beastclans of Sornieth as a whole, but damn if it didn't put a wrench in their operation as Phantom Thieves. What good is a thief if people know your real face, after all?
Sure- technically, when his former school counsiellor gained control of reality, and created a fake one where everyone could've had what they wanted, he could've stayed a Phantom Thief. But it wasn't real, and it hampered everyone's true happiness. It was built on convenient lies, superficial happiness, and brainwashing, and can anyone truly be happy brainwashed? Defeating Maruki as a final act of the Phantom thieves felt great, but it still meant that the original predicament returned. Ren was recognizable as a Phantom thief, and as such, compromised everyone's safety.
The decision to split up and go into hiding was a tough, but unanimous one, in the end. Only Morgana and his contracted demon, Diego, elected to stay with Ren, being a cat and all, so he didn't stand out. Everyone else went their own way, and so did Ren. They keep in contact, certainly, but...
It's a little lonely.
Not to mention, Ren misses being a Phantom Thief. A lot.
He's- he's satisfied with what they accomplished, in a way. The reason he became a Phantom Thief, after all, was inspired by one Mayoshi Shido- a corrupt politician who pinned the blame on Ren when he merely attempted to protect someone from Shido's mistakes. He managed to take his revenge in Shido, managed to force him to confess all his crimes, all the murder he had others commit in his name, but-
It sucks. Not being able to continue being a thief. He still could call upon Arséne's power, and even had the unique ability to enter more contracts with other demons, but without the metaverse, even just being in a contract is taxing, so he dissolved all of them except Arséne's. The power to inflict curses isn't one that's as useful in the real world, but at least it's... something. It's comforting.
It also sucks, not knowing what happened to his rival- Goro Akechi.
Ren liked the tundra- his rival (or perhaps something else?). Akechi had worked for Shido, had manipulated them, yes-
-but they had something genuine. Something good, Ren liked to think. He likes to hope so, at least. Akechi was- is a complicated individual, but their bond had been real. It had been.
Would he have asked for Ren to take revenge on Shido in his stead too, if it hadn't? Ren doesn't think so.
Ren would like to find out what happened to Akechi, sometime. In the future. When his face isn't as fresh in the public's mind. When it's safe to meet up with Ryuji, Ann, Yusuke, Makoto, Futaba, and Haru again as a group. They'll back him up in this, he's sure. He hopes.
His fellow thieves haven't let him down yet. Even if they have their own grudges with Akechi, he's sure they want the closure, too. Morgana reassures him when he doubts them. He's a good companion.
For now, though, Ren has to navigate himself in this new clan he's found himself in- the Purring Winds. Weird name, but hey, they take fugitives of all kinds, so it's a perfect place for him to hang out for the forseeable future. Maybe he can make some allies here, too.
His allies have always been his greatest strenght, after all.
