Novix belongs to a unique field of research known as umbrology, meaning she studies shadows. Not “Shadow”, the element — shadows, the result of something blocking light. You’d think there wouldn’t be that much to say about shadows, but Novix works to prove otherwise. She has written countless research papers and theories about shadows, their causes, their relationship to light, and even a proposed mathematical theorem about calculating the size of a shadow by analyzing the distance from its light source and the angle between them. She takes her work very seriously, and is a brilliant scientific mind.

Don’t take this to mean she’s of a dark character, however. She’s curious and bright-eyed and always looking to learn new things. Since her field of study is so unique, she understands what it’s like to not have colleagues to discuss your findings with, and will always sit and listen to her scientifically-minded clanmates’ theories and thoughts. The only thing she asks for in exchange is that they might do the same for her.

Novix seems very shy about the light; she prefers to slink around in the shadows and seems hesitant about stepping into sunny patches. However, she actually has no fear of the light. She just doesn’t want to miss a second of possible data gathering, and she additionally claims that her brilliance works best in the darkness. As a result, she’s usually awake late at night when most of her clanmates are asleep. It’s harder to gather data about shadows in the dark, but she’s dedicated enough to do strange and seemingly counterintuitive things to get her results. Her nocturnal tendencies have given her a humorous rivalry with the author Afterglow, who prefers to write by light at nighttime, and the two frequently butt heads as Novix tries to convince her to turn off the light so she can collect data, while Afterglow makes her writing light even brighter out of spite.

Novix initially came to Electrician’s Edge because her calculations suggested the cliffside might be an ideal area for providing shade at a plethora of angles for her research. But she has stayed with the Clan of the Striking Bolt because of the fellow scientific minds she has found. Of all the scientists in the clan, Novix is probably the most social, and is constantly working to encourage the scientists to befriend each other, share their work, publish their findings, or to form a convention where all of them can do all these things at once. There’s a lot of unique fields exploring unique topics in the clan, and Novix is determined not to let them stay shut up in their labs with only their own research as a companion.
