Richter was hatched from the earth itself during a particularly powerful earthquake, when the ground shook and roared and split at the seams. His skin has the consistency and strength of stone, and the purple gems that line his body were once amethysts revealed during that mass earthquake. Ever since, Richter has been fascinated with earthquakes like the one that birthed him, and has devoted his life to seismology.

When Richter refers to an earthquake as being “the mother of all earthquakes”, he isn’t using the term metaphorically. Richter has some personal issues stemming from his origins, and any particularly powerful earthquake reminds him of the circumstances of his hatching. In a sense, earthquakes are literally his mother, or at least they are in his eyes.

Richter is proud of his amethyst scales, but they also serve to turn other dragons against him. Usually, while out measuring seismic activity, Richter will smear mud on those scales to keep away gem-hunters who might hurt him to get their claws on his scales. But the moment he comes home again, with a detailed and wiggly seismograph in his claws, he makes sure to polish them off again as soon as he can. His amethyst scales were a gift from the earth, and he cherishes them more than anything else in the world.

Anything else in the world — except for Trinket. Just as Richter is fascinated by earthquakes, Trinket is fascinated with ancient relics, and this makes them perfect for each other. They share their passions, and they are determined to help each other with their goals: Richter, to help Trinket stop the grave robber who injured her, and Trinket, to help Richter make the perfect seismograph of the perfect earthquake. The two middle-aged dragons make an inseparable pair, and concrete mates.
