The lair was sturdily built, as most homes on the Windswept Plateau were, to withstand the gales that occasionally tore across the landscape. On this particular night, however, the inhabitants cowered together, listening with trepidation to the storm that was approaching. Its roar shook the very earth and sent bamboo flying into the air.

The dragons had good reason to be terrified: On this night, several eggs were due to hatch. As the storm drew even closer, ratting the lair’s stone walls, they bent protectively over their nest.

“Windsinger, help us!” they cried. “If our home is to be destroyed, at least spare our children!”

So tremendous was the howl of the storm that they couldn’t even hear themselves. But someone else did.

The Windsinger’s voice, soft and warm, resounded through the lair: “Do not be afraid. The storm will be calmed soon. Its fury will fade, and its power will flow into one of your children.”

As soon as the Windsinger finished speaking, one of the eggs began to crack. The dragons’ keen ears sensed the storm dissipating, the winds no longer shrieking as loudly as they had before. They bent down to croon over the child and usher him into the world. By the time his shell split apart completely, the storm was fully silent. The child tumbled out of his egg, welcomed by the soothing, gentle lullaby of the clan around him.

He was given the name “Riley”, a playful-sounding name for a playful child. Although “playful” was only scratching the surface—this tiny Coatl was a dynamo! As the Windsinger had predicted, he had all the energy of a great storm. He was forever running about, leaping over and onto things. No playmate could match his speed; he was the fastest any of them had ever seen.

But every storm must dissipate eventually, and there were times when Riley could sit still. Not for long—but he still found joy in watching the world go by. He delighted in observing others around him, whether they were hard-working dragons or tiny insects crawling upon leaves. His clanmates took these opportunities to sit with him and teach him more about the world. In this way, he learned, and his interest and excitement grew.

It was inevitable that he would seek a new home elsewhere—after all, he was a Wind dragon. Many Wind dragons bounce from clan to clan, but Riley found himself putting down roots in Moonlight Meadows instead.

At first, many were curious. What would this energetic child, with the power of a storm, eventually become? Would he be a fighter? Perhaps a mighty sorcerer?

But Riley decided that he would not be a warrior, not like a vengeful storm. He had power, certainly, but he would not use it to cause fear, to reduce homes into rubble. He would instead be a cooling breeze, a soothing lullaby, a promise of safety—like the song that had first welcomed him into the world.
