KJB7vQB.gif History
xxSykes never considered himself one for object permanence, if any permanence at all.
xxBorn a guardian, expected to stay in one place, protecting something or someone which was the most dear to him, he had never quite conformed to the standards of his clan. His parents - both sorcerers - had not passed down their craft to him, if anything else, really - only to some of his siblings - and heavily urged the young hatchlings to develop their craft instead of also leaving for The Search as any self-respecting guardian should. It was kind of a part of the name, 'Guardian', born only to protect, seldom having some other purpose. The only thing he had always really wanted to do, even before his parents forced him outside of their reef side cave for his Search Ceremony, was leave and never come back, suffocated slowly by what his parents had once expected of him. It was such a foolish prospect, to protect only a single thing in his entire life, to make choices between location, clan and family, knowing all will be judged no matter what he picked, since apparently a clan or a place or a family was a worthy subject of the Search, while a capricat that Sykes had picked up, affectionately named 'Obscura' and carried back to his lair, was not.
xxPerhaps it was a final act of defiance before he left for his 'real' Search, keeping the cat at his home clan and denouncing the title of 'home' forever.
xxNo matter how far he ran from his genetic make-up, ignored the responsibility and the reasons that caused his own loneliness and misery, Sykes could never quite get away from the emptiness that consumed him every step of the way. He did not miss his family - he did not hate them, of course, but knew they were not the reason for this ache - that much, at least; claws itching to work and take on some form of even the slightest action, willing terribly to protect.
xxWhile the other guardians offered up their size and talons and swore their oaths to clans for
xxresidence or even completely for free, Sykes knew he wouldn't be able to stay in one place too long, wanting the momentary highs of being able to care for something, anything at all. So naturally he rejoiced when wrongly assumed for a bodyguard while on a deserted crossroad, spending some of his savings to get himself enough armor to maybe look the part. Cheap filigree armor sold by - funny enough - another guardian, likely retired from his protection.
xxWith a sigh, the seller asked what the younger dragon needed it for. Sykes couldn't come up with an answer that sounded like truth so he decided not to lie at all, simply shrugging.
xxIt was incredibly simple to find his first client, a fae merchant dealing in wares he had no business to ask about. The only thing he had to do was stand next to him, open doors for him and stand guard next to his tents as he traveled; scaring off robbers and other petty criminals, not once even raising his club or claw. Freelance bodyguarding was a job- and well-paying at that, for the lack of things Sykes had to do it was in no way proportional to his pay. And so he fared.
xxHe knew it was useless for him to seek solace with his genetic background and primal need to protect, to try to shut it down and maybe attempt to protect his own mental state or a familiar, but nothing quite struck his chords, no client stuck out to him over the years.
xxSykes ran his claws through his impressive beard while signing yet another contract. It was another guardian this time, odd since those that hired him were usually smaller species, holding herself up like she definitely knew her worth, took pride in the starseer cloak draped over her shoulders, twinkling blue eyes barely visible in the shade it cast over her head. The contract was phrased rather simply; protect her in her own home, and outside it, for she traveled quite a bit, and Sykes would get extra pay if he would watch over the area while she worked.
xxHer job had remained a mystery, mostly - it was not his business to ask, so he did not - but once he stepped foot into her traveling workshop he could already understand, herbs hanging from the ceiling, most rooms regular but her kitchen filled with cauldrons and odd smells and letters of guidance for the other witches in the clan. He went outside again, glanced at the greenery around territory.
xxAh, well. He did not know why such a peaceful place would need protection, but money was money. He could use a rest from his travels in other lands, no longer feeling any of the grime rubbing his scales from his time in plague or dampness from his time in the Water clans. He was back to right where he started, his own home clan not that far off. He may visit them, sometime, if he felt the time was right. Sykes even had a room of his own, a pantry converted to a little bedroom, with a bed and nightstand and armor. The guardian sighed. Not that he'd stay for long.
xxAs much as he got prepared for a broken contract, payment and a quick departure, no such things came. He simply lived in his room, did his duty, got his paychecks every few weeks until his employer moved, with him in tow, to a clan deep in the Viridian Labyrinth.
xxAt a point he noticed himself smiling more when she was around, watching her teach witchcraft in its purest forms to the young acolytes in the clan - her mate included - and even used his paycheck, to, finally, set down the first sprout of a root in the clan, getting himself a little empty hollow in the caves that he could finally call his own. Only a few weeks later did he ask she stop providing him paychecks and food, for he was somehow willing to do it all for free. An urge had grown inside him to simply protect and keep her, her mate, hatchlings and clan safe; now picking up light gardening and helping the clan with odd chores to pay for his own needs. For once in his life, he didn't feel the sudden need to run away from responsibility, slowly falling in love with both Hecate herself and Lunah, her partner, merry enough to even be near them, even more so when they accepted him into the family with open arms.
xxAn artifact or place to protect? Sure. However, partners or a family was possibly the most prestigious outcome of a Search you could hope for.
xxIn retrospect, Sykes was glad to have gone so long without something to protect, for all the affection that went unanswered in his soul was bottled up to spend all on his brand new family. And although he may never quite follow in their sorcery ways, the Guardian will still stand ground before the clan at all costs and strike down all who may even think of wishing harm to what is his to protect.
