xx“You have heard of knocking, have you not?” Lunah snapped as his familiar, Fortune, entered the stifling room, where he had set up his cauldron and sizeable collection of spellbooks.
xxWith a “mrrp”, the mischievous Lesser Wisp plopped onto the desk next to Lunah.
xxLunah sighed, and rubbed his face with a giant paw. “I’m not really angry with you. And I’m sorry for snapping. It’s just that this impertinent spell isn’t working!” The young familiar yawned, and hopped onto the book, pushing the page of the worn spellbook over. Lunah growled at the familiar’s naughtiness, then his eyes widened as he looked at the new page.
xx“That’s it! That’s what we’ve been missing! We need a Crawdad!” It occurred to Lunah that his familiar was more intelligent than he gave him credit for. Newly invigorated, Lunah rushed to the door, then turned back to his familiar, his patience already wearing thin.
xx“Are you coming?” Fortune looked at him and rolled over within his orb. He then disappeared, and in his place came a vision of a ghost-like Lunah picking him up. Exasperated, Lunah rolled his eyes and scooped up the wisp. “Let’s go.”
xxThey began with the beach, although Lunah was aware that Crawdads were uncommon in the icy sea at this time of year, but Lunah needed the spell urgently. As he put down the wisp, Lunah looked out at the sea.
xx“We’ll start with the docks. It’s likely that there are some Crawdads near there, seeing as their food source is there.” Lunah followed after the Lesser Wisp, who seemed more eager to lend Lunah a claw now that they were out of his dingy and rather warm spell room.
xxLunah shivered as they approached the dock, and ignoring the dock workers, took a deep breath before sinking his body into the freezing water. As a juvenile dragon, he had concocted and drunk a potion that allowed him to breathe underwater, yet he cursed under his breath at
his lack of foresight for creating something that kept him warm despite the temperature of the water, something that would have been remarkably useful given that he had gone to the Ice Region to search for these crawdads.
xxFortune had been surprisingly pleased to jump in the water and after stalling for a little, sighted the crawdads that his dragon had been searching for. Quickly, Lunah harvested two, being mindful of the fact that they were plentiful in this area, and so he wasn’t too worried about overharvesting.
xx“Alright, let’s go.” Lunah said, and his familiar blew bubbles in response and rose to the surface. As they began their long trek home, a sudden rush of affection came over Lunah for his familiar, and the usually grumpy dragon murmured a thanks towards his familiar, which Fortune acknowledged with turning bright pink in his orb.
xxLunah picked up Fortune again, and they continued on home. It had been a good day.
