Biography

────- Mayim
he / him
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The sounds of shrill songs beneath the chilly water of the ice-covered lands signaled the arrival of the lovely spring, the breeding season for the Weddell seals, both the selkiefolk and their non-magical counterparts.

It was rare to catch a moment of silence as the seals called across the sheets of snow, especially as the rowdy males fought over breathing holes in the ice to gain control over the available females in the area. Clashes and scuffles were common and aggressive, but thankfully they have not had a case of any pups getting stranded in a fight before.

But something that was always music to any seal’s ears were the chirps of newborn pups.

With the arrival of the season came the pupping season, a wonderful time for many of the seals to congregate in fast-ice colonies and meet up with old friends while they took care of their new pups.

Sumire was no different from the other mothers that were in this small colony, except for the fact that she was a first-time mother.

And the fact that her child... was a runt

The frail little pup wiggled rather slowly on the snow, but when he did attempt to flop towards Sumire with the intention to feed, he resembled a land-bound flounder, sneezing pitifully as snow flew up his nose.

Sumire called her little one ‘Anani" for the fact that he resembled a very bedraggled cloud whenever the white snow embedded itself thoroughly in his alarmingly thin pelt.

The pup did not compare to the rest of the more playful, more energetic pups that were already daring to plunge bravely into the freezing water. Instead, Anani cried woefully whenever his mother nudged him towards the edge of their breathing hole, too afraid to even dip his nose into the surface of the water.

Sumire sighed, gazing wistfully at Anani as he suckled contentedly by her side, wondering if her child would even make it past puphood. It was very unlikely for such a delicate male to make it past childhood, even as a selkie.

Anani would not stand a chance against strong males who are able to inflict severe damage on their opponents as they fought over females and breathing holes.

However, Sumire was going to try her best to help her pup through his pup years, teaching him how to swim, hunt, and shed his pelt. Even how to walk or pass as a landdweller. She had to ensure the survival of her first pup, even if it meant having to starve.

A low, persistent growl rumbled from Sumire’s belly, followed by a longing ache for food.

Right, food. She has not eaten for over a week since Anani was born, and she had to make sure that the pup could endure staying in one place with her foraging under water.

Suddenly, a long, deafening wail rang out in the crisp air. It was a frantic call of distress, causing every seal in the area to lift their heads and crane their necks towards the direction of the sound.

Many of the pups that were playing all halted in their tracks, raising their curious, gleaming eyes at the seal that had called out. Even the pups that were sleeping had stirred, chirping in confusion.

The seal that had keened blaringly dragged herself closer to the proximity of the rest of the colony, speaking frantically in rushed seal-speak.

"The water, it’s rising! There’s a huge wave coming towards us!" The distraught old seal huffed as she hauled herself across the snow. "Everybody move your pups! We’ll all be washed off!"

"Wave?"

"Run!"

"It’s coming!"

"Oh, old Pearlwort is being hysterical again."

"Mamaaa!-"

"C’mon, little one, let’s get moving!"

Over the chaotic buzz of the muddled colony of seals, Sumire could hear the clear calls of mothers, shrill calls, and grunts to rally their pups.

Over in the distance, there was an unnatural tide, building up as it rushed towards the ice the seals were in. Dark clouds loomed ominously over the large wave, as if it were an omen.

But what sent a spike of terror as sharp as icicles into Sumire was not the disarray of the colony but the sheer size of the incoming wave as it tore past ice floes and carried them.

In a panic, Sumire barked a quick command to Anani, who had stopped feeding and pressed himself flat against her belly in fear of the incoming wave, eyes wide with terror.

"Anani, quick, we have to run!"

The runt still stared at the increasingly huge wave as it surged towards them, his frantic gaze pinned on the glacier-sized swell.

"Anani!"

But the pup would not reply. He was frozen, petrified like a fossil.

Hastily, Sumire fumbled at her pelt with her flippers, quickly ripping it off and revealing her landwalker form. She ignored the ripple of astonished gasps from surrounding seals who were starting to flee, speedily wrapping her arms around Anani and hoisting him up.

"A selkie among us!"

"How incredible…"

"Oh my stars!"

"I’ve never seen one around here before."

Sumire flashed one quick look towards the looming wave before she took off, sprinting as fast as her rusty legs could take her. It felt strange and peculiar to have her bare feet press against the bitterly cold snow, but she was careful not to trip or drop Anani.

Her pup was unnaturally still, chirruping as he examined his bizarre surroundings with his abnormal green eyes. Anani gave a mournful cry, tucking his face in his mother’s chest as he tried to shield his face from the wintry air.

"I know, baby, I know." Sumire cooed comfortingly, trying to calm the little runt down despite the fact that she was panicking herself as the crashing sound of water and ice collided behind her, the surprised yelps of the colony being drowned out by the impact of the wave. Her legs were burning with a furious ache akin to fire, but she could not stop.

The clouds had somehow gotten more ominous, swarming the darkening skies like a swarming flock of seabirds. Snow had started to fall in heavy torrents, clouding her vision with only sheets of white.

Sumire squinted through the small gaps between the blinding white, dread settling on her like layers of snow on ice, when she realized that her path was coming to an end.

A seemingly boundless expanse of water replaced the ice in front of the selkie, making her skid to a violent stop before she tumbled straight into the water. Anani gave a startled cry at their abrupt halt, using their flippers to cover his head.

"Maamaaaaa!"

Sumire winced at her little pup’s terrified shriek, feeling surprisingly hot tears well up into her eyes, realizing that it was the first time Anani had spoken anything other than animalistic noises.

She whipped her head back, helpless, as the large surge of icy water surged towards them. It was too late to switch forms now, and Anani could not have known how to swim anyways, especially with such a thin layer of fat and an ill-suited pelt of pup fur.

"I’m so sorry, Anani." She murmured to her pup as she wrapped him in her own pelt, cradling him flush to her body to make sure that her body would absorb all the impact of the rushing wall of water before the pup did. "I’m so sorry, my baby."

The rumbling of the ice gave way to the brutal, savage strike of the merciless sea. Sumire shut her eyes and held onto the bundle of fluff tightly in her arms as she felt her bones disintegrate upon the impact of the water, followed by the numbing sensation of the cold as her vision flickered with dark spots.

Moments before she slipped fully into the abyss, she flooded the pelt around Anani with magic, hoping that the pup would survive the impending tempest. It was already too late for Sumire, as she felt her own body dust from the fatal blow of the surge.

Oh, old Leviathans of the sea, please let my pup survive.

~ ~ ~

A little, frail shape washed up on the shore, covered with a dark pelt that was barely more than a fragment.

The little Weddell seal pup blinked wearily, snorting and coughing up little handfuls of water as he wheezed, but the sand that had gone up his nose made him sneeze violently.

The pup moved his flippers feebly, quivering as the cold water sunk heavily into his pup pelt, still susceptible to low temperatures. He barely was able to move an inch before he set his muzzle down on the damp sand again, not even moving a whisker-length when the water rushed up the shore to tickle his hind flippers.

The runt closed his eyes, chirping pathetically despite the fact that he was freezing and exhausted. "Maaa… mama.."

He gave a tiny, desperate weep for his mother, only able to smell her washed-out scent on the little scrap of the pelt. He jolted at the familiar smell of Sumire, but he only remembered blurred memories of ice and water.

"Mamaa-"

"Is that a seal pup?"

A husky voice and the sound of splashing cut off the tiny seal’s calls, making him press closer to the scrap of his mother’s pelt in fear.

"Of course it is, brother!"

"Is it sick? Or dead? It’s not movin'."

"Well.. I don't know actually."

Anani turned his head warily in the direction of the voices, curiously sniffing the air to catch the scent of the newcomers, but to no avail.

"It moved!" A large, black creature rose its mighty head out of the water, revealing a seemingly large, white eye before submerging back into the water. Another similar creature did the same, eyeing the little pup with its devilish eye before dipping back into the sea.

Although one was smaller than the other, they were terrifying to Anani, who scrambled away from the edge of the shore while gripping his mother’s tattered pelt in his jaws. However, the sand was too loose, sending the runt sliding back further into the water.

"Don’t accidentally beach yourself, little bro."

"Don't be daft, Sylas!"

The larger of the two beasts approached, sliding upwards onto the shore and barely missing one of Anani’s hind flippers by a mere whisker. The tiny pup panicked, giving a chirp of distress while he thrashed around in an attempt to climb back up and away from the water.

The huge creature wiggled backwards on the sand and sank back into the undulating water, and the tide came back, giving an annoyed click of its teeth. Its smaller counterpart swam up to it, nudging it with the tip of its nose. "A little seal is not worth getting beached, Sylph."

"But-"

"No buts, if the enemy orca pod in this area sees us here, I’ll have to fight again."

"Sylas!"

"We’re only here for a short trip." "I'M GOING TO TRY AGAIN, BROTHER!"

The monochrome creature rode the tide, this time traveling further across the shore than before. Anani cried in horror as the beast opened its jaws, revealing a maw of sharp teeth that was ready to bite down on his flippers again.

The little pup curled up in a little ball, waiting for the teeth to close around him.

But it never did.

The runt blinked as a blue blur rushed in front of him, sending a spray of sand towards him.

"Mama! Mamamaaa-" Anani instinctively called, burying his snout in the scrap of his mother’s pelt as the sand particles settled themselves on his own sopping pelt like gentle snowfall.

The Wildclaw that had leaped over him lashed out its claws in a slashing motion, manipulating the water to spike backwards and spray directly at the orca like a bolt, effectively disorienting it.

The beast sputtered incoherently as it placed a glaring look of offense towards the landdweller while it retreated back into the sea. The other orca gave a gruff noise, sounding freakishly like it was laughing. The two massive creatures exchanged a glance when the Wildclaw growled menacingly, before they both slowly swam off into the distance.

Anani shivered in fear when the landdweller stepped back, looking down at the little pup. After a few moments of terror as the pup hugged his mother’s pelt close to him, the Wildclaw finally spoke.

"Oh, you poor thing."

The runt did not stop shaking.

"I’m not sure whether I’m supposed to remove a selkie pup from this place, but you need some immediate medical assistance."

The pup gave a pitiful squeak when he was ripped away from Sumire’s spotted coat as the landdweller picked him up and immediately whipped his head around to bite fruitlessly at the claws that were holding him.

"Oh, that must’ve belonged to your mother," the wildclaw sighed. "I wonder what happened."

The dragon picked up the little scrap, gently draping it over Anani’s flippers. The pup frantically snatched it back, closing his eyes as he continued to vibrate in fear.

"You have nothing to fear, little one. I’m sure to help you."

The little pup cried softly as it inhaled his mother’s faded scent.

"My name is Ryu, and I shall call you Mayim for now. Let’s go home, little one."

notes
- littol baby, has social anxiety and get attached easily
- at least 1.5 meters in seal form
- Ryu is his adopted father, and although there are some difficulties when raising Mayim on his own (especially when Ryu is very unfamiliar with selkie culture), they both love and trust each other very much
- because of an incident involving Sylas and Sylph when he was still a pup, he gets anxious and freaks out whenever he meets Xev and sees Sylas/Sylph at the back following them
- just imagining Ryu learning about Father's day from land dwellers, and he told Mayim about it and ever since then Mayim keeps an internal calender and gives Ryu a small present every year
just small trinkets like a pretty seashell etc
Ryu keeps them in a chest in their home
- the pelt of Mayim's mother (or what had remained of it) had been remade into a quilt blanket that Ryu had made. it acts as a security blanket and calms Mayim down
