Biography

Xev

Spotted Seal
Dwarf Octopus
Cumulus Seal Flipper
Nogglet

Xev is an adult leopard seal selkie who is in a constant state of dying due to a run-in with a sinking anchor. They only survived because the magic levels in the water were extremely high, gifting Xev enough strength to pull themselves off the fluke of the anchor. Though Xev survived the terrifying ordeal, they are left with a pelt that is almost always partly disintegrating into the water, and a persistent ache in their soul where they were impaled.

Xev now lives their days as a half-skeleton more than anything else, hopping into their leopard seal form to chill out on the ice floes, as well as rarely shedding their skin to become a skeleton to be able to travel on land. Penguins and krill are aplenty in their icy realm, as well as other seals to quickly chase down and munch on. The only thing that Xev fears is an orca, even worse, a mer-orca.

As a selkie, Xev is much larger than the average leopard seal, donning an unusual length of 5 meters. They are also more powerful in terms of strength and agility, and is a menace to passing schools of fish or even other mers with their naturally sharp teeth. However, Xev can be found relaxing on ice floes most of the time, flashing an evil and serpentine grin to travelers or dragons on fishing boats that far into the Antarctic. Xev has learned not to swim under boats with anchors, though.

  • Xev is not able to reach as extreme depths as the average Undertide as the water pressure can easily accelerate the speed of her body's disintegration. They are also cautious with the speed of their ascent or descent for the same reason.
  • Krill, plankton, small fish or other small sealife like to feed on bits of Xev's hide in the belief that they are a dead and decomposing animal if they sit still long enough underwater. Xev absolutely hates this and snaps at the tiny creatures with their jaws to scare them off.
  • To escape Sylas, Xev hops onto a large ice floe and simply takes off their pelt, transforming into an Undertide and doing their best baikal seal impression with watery eyes and funny noises while ignoring him completely, pretending as if they cannot understand a word that he is saying (hoping another travelling Undertide will swoop in and save them in the belief that they are actually an Undertide).
  • Xev has caused at least one fishing boat full of amateurs to panic and get stuck in the ice. (Nobody died but it was embarassing!!).

The Anchor Incident

Xev swam through the water, only visible as a serpentine figure snaking under the churning waves. Her target, a large fishing boat, was rocking from side to side as the ocean threw it around like a predator toying with its prey.

Xev knew that clumsy sailors almost always dropped unsecured nets of fish during storms like these, perfect for days where she was too lazy to spend her precious energy to hunt.

But this storm was different.

Dark clouds obscured the faded moon. They churned grimly in the night sky, as black as an orca's skin. The half-visible moon’s flush was painted silver by the thunderheads, casting down bare shivers of light with a ghostly glow. Underneath the moon, the snow moved towards the boat like a wraith’s veil of sorrow. A winnowing wind fermented and sighed, rippling the surface of the water.

But she had to take her chance, or else she would have to starve for the rest of the night. The grey currents seethed unevenly, not ideal for penguins to swim in without getting washed off-track. Therefore, Xev had to search for a different option.

And this would have been the perfect situation, if the turbulent weather was not morphing into something even worse.

The yelling of the poor dragons on the vessel had increased, but they were muffled under the noise of crashing water and the eerie screeching of ice floes sliding across each other as they lurched to and fro.

Stealthily, Xev rose her head above the dark waters, craning her long neck to view the state of the commotion on the medium-sized fishing vessel. A large, weathered Ridgeback towered above two panicked Tundras, barking gruffly at them while they hastily fumbled with thick ropes to secure the full nets that were sliding across the floor.

Despite the Ridgeback’s agitated tone, Xev could easily pick up the grim dread in their voice, as if they have never encountered such a violent tempest before. All three of the land-dwellers seemed very uneasy as the water pummeled their boat with incredible strength, hurling it aggressively in another direction.

Xev’s snout slid open in a sly grin as she watched a stray net glide across the sole of the boat, flying past the railings and into the increasingly harsh waters. She dove down immediately, ignoring the bubbles that sprung up around her eyes as she surged towards the sinking fishnet.

She was a bare whisker away from being able to grab it.

A bare whisker, before the faint sound of a voice roared above water.

“The anchor! It-”

Xev’s eyes widened as a long, rusted chain descended towards her, sending a cascade of bubbles into her vision. It effectively disoriented her, causing her to instinctively thrash around blindly when the chain wrapped around her flippers. The gurgle of the suddenly displaced water made the whiskers on her muzzle tingle uncomfortably as she flailed helplessly, tiring as each second ticked by.

She could barely turn to react when her chest exploded with pain, causing her to roar in surprise. Bewildered and in a frenzy, Xev whipped her head towards the source of the pounding agony, only witnessing as a cloud of blood bloomed into the water around her as she grunted in a startle.

The fluke of a heavy, tarnished anchor had pierced cleanly through Xev’s thorax, likely fallen from the same fishing vessel that she was eyeing just mere minutes ago.

Her mouth gaped in shock as the anchor sank, pulling her down with it into the unilluminated depths of the abyss. Xev was unsure of what to do for once, her fighting spirit all ripped away from her upon seeing a landdweller-made hunk of metal through her body as she hauled unwillingly into the void of the ocean floor.

It was only until she felt the numb sensation of sand, that she knew that she had hit rock bottom. It was only a matter of time before the air in her lungs dwindled until it was all gone.

But the sandbed thrummed with the rich aura of…

Magic.

It was powerful.

Xev closed her eyes, focusing as she drew up her own, fatigued magic from her soul and shed her seal pelt, morphing into her half-skeleton form to make it easier to free herself.

Even in this form, the damage was grim. The fluke was still embedded deep through in her ribcage, already having broken two ribs. They were in grim condition, but the humming of the unnatural magic drove Xev’s instincts to survive back into her head.

Fumbling weakly with her fingers, she tried to push herself off the anchor, but it was to no avail. She growled in tired exasperation, not willing to give up yet. But time was running out.

Xev’s lungs burned as she scrambled desperately to dislodge her rib bones from the fluke of the anchor, but the edges of her vision were already starting to fade to black.

The metallic-tasting blood pouring out from her broken bones were muddling up her surroundings, making it harder to see and figure out how she was going to get out of the ordeal.

Alas, Xev’s small glimmer of hope was dying again, just like her as she wiggled powerlessly like a fish stuck in a hook.

But, there was a surge again. Of old, ancient magic that was rumored to have died out hundreds of centuries ago. But every sea creature knew how it felt whenever it came for them, but the fatally-injured selkie was already out of air.

Xev watched blankly as tendrils of sand snaked up from the sandbed, twisting mesmerizing around her bones. It sparkled with a light ambience, but she could only narrowly see it through her slitted eyesight that was already nearly fading to nothing. With a gentle tug on her body, the mysterious strands of strand hoisted her upwards.

And suddenly, a new burst of energy and adrenaline rushed into Xev’s blood.

She blasted with triumph as she ripped herself from the anchor with her renewed strength, not caring about the small shards of bones that had broken off in the process. She left a stream of crimson gore as she made a frantic dash towards the surface, barely a glimmer left in her vision.

As Xev left the depths of the ocean, her strength faded tremendously, leaving her fatigued.

The unnatural magic had already abandoned her before she had even reached an ice floe, leaving her bleeding freely again.

She dared to shut her eyes as she gasped for air, unwary of any predators nearby. All she wanted to do was rest, and figure out what the hell that happened at the bottom of the ocean.

For now, Xev was still gravely wounded, and she would not survive long if she did not seek any refuge.

But she could not move, she could not swim any further.

As she floated in the water, she let the waves rock her body as she listened to the sound of the tides. She really was at the mercy of the tides now, stranded and without help.

Xev could only hope for the best as another whirl of magic rushed over her again, but this time, her consciousness slipped away before she could even try to do anything about it.
