Aura
Golden Sorceress

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
VxNqo4p.png
Rumors abound about the Golden Sorceress. Even her earliest days are shrouded in mystery. “What spurred such a keen fascination in gold?” many dragons ask.

Some contend that she was born to a poor clan, and that the hardships of poverty taught her to seize any treasure she could lay her claws upon. Others hypothesize that her family was prosperous, and that the importance of wealth was impressed upon her early on.

All will agree that she was intelligent even then, a keen student of the magical arts. But how did she discover her aurumancy, the magic with which she manipulates gold?

Here, again, opinions diverge. A few dragons think that she stumbled across this magic by accident. Most, however, believe that she searched for it for a very long time. That she learned about the secret early on and did all she could to master it.

Did she find it in a tome unearthed in a dusty library? Was it wisdom passed on to her by a nameless, now-dead sage? Perhaps a potion concocted from elusive ingredients, or magic from an artifact plundered from a hidden tomb?

One of the few certainties about the Golden Sorceress is that her experiments started out small. She began with an ordinary pebble picked up from a garden path. But under the force of her new magic, it liquefied into a new shape, an ornately molded ring.

Its shape was eye-catching enough: hundreds of delicate, interwoven tendrils. But what really made it noteworthy, what lit the fire in Aura’s eyes, was that it had been transmuted into pure gold.

Aura wore the ring openly. A few dragons noticed, but their flattery and questions were met with only a sly smile. The sorceress, like many other magicians, basked in their admiration—all while staunchly refusing to reveal her secrets to them.

The ring eventually disappeared, transmuted into other, more luxurious treasures: golden bracelets, even more intricately woven; collars and pendants and tiaras. Golden beads and brooches, monocles and pins.

The Golden Sorceress exercised her magic freely. She initially set limits for herself, but soon left these behind. Everything she could turn her will upon was transformed into pure gold.

As her wealth increased, so did her zeal. She threw herself deeper into her studies, experimenting with new ways to manipulate gold.

A cloak covered in gold leaf? Certainly—but what if she wanted to go a little further than that? Why not a cloak completely woven from it?

It took her many nights to perfect this wondrous garment...but she succeeded, of course. She was the Golden Sorceress, and gold bent to her every whim.

When she next left her home, she wore the cloak of gold. She was nearly invisible beneath it: Its brilliance eclipsed her completely. But all the dragons around her saw, and she walked past them with her head held high, leaving a trail of awed stares and whispered suppositions....

One might be wondering why there are so many conflicting stories about Aura. Why there are only rumors and threadbare tales.

Shortly after the Golden Sorceress mastered her craft, she systematically eliminated all she’d used in her pursuit of it. Manuscripts were burned, official records disposed of, and those whom she had spoken to quietly disappeared.

She had found the path to success, and now she destroyed it, ensuring that no one else would achieve the same glory. The secret of aurumancy, she decided, would be hers alone.

Divider-640x50-4-2.png Others did try to wrest it from her: greedy thieves, jealous sorcerers, assassins sent by shadowy watchers. But she had ways of protecting herself—and those who did not succumb to violence were easily bribed to turn against their employers.

This, however, is not the sole reason such attempts have dwindled. The rumors about Aura continue...and there is some truth to even the darkest ones.

She wore her golden cloak daily, reveling in the attention it brought her. No matter the weather, even when she went to bed—until one day, she woke up to it plastered against her wings. It clung to her like a second skin, each vein and scale picked out in delicate brilliance.

She should have been alarmed by that. Should have been worried about how the gold had somehow bonded itself to her flesh.

But she was instead enamored of how it looked, glistening against her wings. “Why should I try to remove it?” she dreamily asked herself. “I look grander...more glorious...”

And over the next few weeks, she reveled in the touch of gold as she never had before, letting it trickle over her fingers and arms. She watched it solidify, marveling at its silky warmth, allowing herself to be dazzled by it. “Better than any adornments,” she murmured, lost in the scintillating light of her gold-painted scales.

Golden horns, golden talons. Golden mane and tail. Even her wings, in time, became completely immobile, too heavy to lift her in flight.

But oh, it didn’t matter—the exhilaration she felt at this splendor was better than any sky! She was still visible outside her abode at times, moving slowly, almost laboriously, beneath the weight of so much gold. And still the dragons stared—but nobody dared touch her now.

It was all too easy to imagine the luminescence flowing over them instead, drowning them beneath a luxurious but lifeless tide....

In her atelier, surrounded by the treasures she’d created over the years, Aura paused for a repast. She remained mortal, and still needed food and drink. She lifted a goblet to her mouth.

And gold spilled down, bright and sticky as honey, clinging to her underside.

NSR4rGL.png It glittered like sunbeams. And it was all she could look at, even as she coughed up flecks of the radiant metal, heedless of the havoc it was wreaking upon her body and mind.

“Splendid,” she rasped, her gold-painted lips drawing back in a smile. Indeed, she, Aura, had mastered the magic of gold—

—or had it, in fact, mastered her?
