UNNAMED ✧ JARLKIN ✦ » Private Detective » personality › personality › personality » pronouns "A brief quote or something" A short tooltip-esque description. |
"I am Jarlkin—the baleful shadow cast by the fulgent light of truth. ...Heh, just kidding! How was that? Too dramatic? Just right?"

Jarlkin's career has been both complex and straightforward in different ways. From early on, he knew he wanted to be a detective. He definitely did romanticize it a bit in his mind, but for a thrill-seeking, analytical mind like himself, he found all the work truly fulfilling. A Light dragon's greatest treasure is the truth, and this was really all he sought. Now, the work of a private investigator did not exactly follow the exact paths of his more famous relatives', but it seemed similar enough to him. He decided he would simply use his sleuthing skills to arm himself with the truth; he would wield the light of knowledge to protect the weak and innocent. Night Warriors and Supernatural Investigators are meant to protect the fangless, after all, from both unseen and more corporeal threats alike. However, one assignment would find his ideals of justice in conflict with the duties of his family lines. It was not even an especially noteworthy case... (The "rightful" incarceration of a criminal who had seen no other choice, with Jarlkin's discoveries irreversibly splintering the family...) Nor was it any special revelation that the truth could be a painful antiseptic. Jarlkin knew this fact, had known this, and was sure he had understood it, but perhaps he was just naïve—only by experiencing its burn could he really grasp it. He felt silly for his ignorance and guilty about the consequences of his work, and his enthusiasm fizzled out. He spent several years on hiatus to reorient himself. It wasn't like he had a shortage of options; he could always be an actual warrior or investigator. But no matter what sort of work he threw himself into, or what manner of soul-searching he did, he still knew what his calling was and had always been. He had to find some way to reconcile the role of his bloodline with the truth he so revered. Ultimately, it was an encounter with a more unsavory detective that ended up reigniting his conviction. Jarlkin had been on the road to find any kind of guidance, but ran into someone who would serve as an "antithetical lodestar" of sorts to what he wanted to be. Athebyne was also a traveling investigator. He, too, had been cut by justice's double-edged sword. He had no joy for his work and regarded the truth as merely a necessary evil. He decided what truths were just by only his own compass and discarded the rest. He was no villain; he acted to protect his clients and even his opponents. Jarlkin had to admit that Athebyne was a truly noble soul, one definitely more compassionate and empathetic than he could hope to be. Still, these were not the principles Jarlkin wanted to embody: truth and justice must rest beyond even the Lightweaver's divine providence. They were all ideas as fundamental and beyond-reach as destiny. And of course, all three of these could be seen by anyone as both boon and bane, as most things in the world. Perhaps there was an element of inevitability to his work that he just needed to adapt to.... Jarlkin finally came to the conclusion that as a detective, his duty was still to the absolute truth. Pain had to be an inevitable consequence of living—so, to continue to uphold the truth, he would embrace an amor fati philosophy. However, as recompense and responsibility, he would act as the shadow tasked with equilibrating any harm inflicted by his illumining discoveries. Of course, he would have to figure out what exactly this sort of "healing work" entailed, but he was pretty confident that he could figure it out soon enough. With fresh resolve, he jumped back into detective work, determined to illuminate even the most bitter truths no matter what. He would prowl the starless abyss to drag every lie into the brilliant, burning, blinding light. ...At least, that's what's written on his business card. He doesn't see much action within Caelbloom, but the bustling town serves Jarlkin well as a base of operations, and he seems to enjoy getting to hang out with other dragons who are just as peculiar and single-minded as him. |
