i. once upon a time, a cloud… ➔ before the gates opened
• You’d think heaven followed him around. As she looked at her mentor, her naïve heart felt he might have been the universe itself. Her only family. She knew that the first divines thought themselves a family too, but destiny disagreed. That wouldn’t happen to her. She wouldn’t let history repeat itself. She disliked them, their own selfishness destroyed each other, she vowed she would never act how those siblings did. She’ll follow him wherever.
• What could it mean to be an exemplary divine? To obey. If no one rocked the boat, then tomorrow was bound to stay identical to today. “Do you wonder how it would feel for those whose gift were akin to a curse? They’re not asking for change to spite us, they want a better life. They wish to find happiness in tomorrow. They have the same goal as us… we have to be generous in our happiness. Help them if we can.” She disagreed, but didn’t interrupt him. • Associating with troublesome individuals would ruin his life, and hers too. “I don’t understand why you wish to help that pretentious savant. He’ll bring about the wrath of the universe, building ominous things in the mortal world…” Why couldn’t they simply stay happy together peacefully, he always asked as if she owed everyone her help. Did he even care that she was scared? “I… I can’t help him. If you wish for history to repeat itself… If you don’t care for any consequences that would befall all of us… then don’t ask me anything anymore.” ➔ after the gates closed on her
• Why was she doing this? She already refused, and yet… she couldn’t let him suffer the consequences alone. Whatever curse the universe brought upon the world, she’ll stay by his side. “If the universe can hear, I hope someday I’ll have the courage to do what I believe is right. For now, I can’t bring myself to be at odds with him. I hope you’ll forgive us.” As she flew, the rain clouds felt heavier than ever to carry through the sky. Why carry divine water into the mortal world? Except for the cursed flowers it sprouted, that lake’s water was quite ordinary. Was the savant tricking everyone?
• Going through the portal, she wished everything could be easier. A last prayer. And just like that, everything turned black. It felt like someone had pulled down the curtain. She felt herself falling, then water burning through her lungs. Nothingness. How much time had passed? She awoke abruptly, gasping for breath. Everything was too bright. Her eyes darted around, trying to see if something was amiss. She found herself in the middle of an immense pool, surrounded by marble buildings adorned with too many columns to count. Home never felt so far away. • Her memories were slightly foggy, she wondered if she had finally been cursed by the universe, or if it was simply a side effect of that fall. There seemed to be nothing to worry about otherwise. The place didn’t feel sinister at all, quite the opposite in fact. “Changed your mind I see. It was quite predictable of you. However I’m grateful you did. I built everything here because I believed a better world was possible. I hope this place can make your dreams a reality too. Come with me, I’ll show you around.” She wanted to scream at that damned savant, but followed him. As she exited the pool, she realized it wasn’t the water that weighed her down, her many wings felt heavy on her. She couldn’t fly anymore. |
