i. once upon a time, a reflection… ➔ before the candles melted
• The world was beautiful. The sun had risen countless times but never shone so brightly before. Even though it hadn’t fully risen yet. The sky was a clear blue, unblemished… unreal. He wanted to make a space for himself, challenge the sun. Someday create stars that would outlast the dawn.
• Perspective is tricky. He created whole galaxies of stars, but he was powerless to his surroundings. Everything within reach reaked of ordinary. So he asked for more. “No matter the cost, I believe it will be matched by my will. Make a deal with me if you believe me to be so weak.” • Mistakes happen within a blink of an eye, just because a single day didn’t feel like enough, you wished the wrong thing, prayed to the wrong god. And then it happens. It really does. The universe is a cruel, vile place. Days ago, he was happy, had a friend and stargazed enough for the both of them. But today he was alone, and he feared it might be forever. ➔ after the candles were blown out
• There were no doubts at all that the sun would rise again tomorrow. But until then, the sky remained dark, stars extinguished. There wasn’t anyone to see it anymore, why create anything. There was only him, the night and his aching heart. He thought about his friend, what he could do to try bringing them back. He felt tears forming in his eyes again. He didn’t wish for this.
• Should he leave? Go somewhere that was not here? Perhaps it was better to disappear. That night he stayed up until sunrise. No one was ever coming home, even if his friend found a way back, they wouldn’t want to see him anymore. He awoke to find a new dawn, something felt different now. He couldn’t stop staring at the sunrise. • He saw a flicker of light beyond the sun. Was it an hallucination of his tired mind? Then a flash of his friend. He stood and ran as fast as he could, calling out. But nothing. He stared around himself, he was sure that there was somebody there, lights reflected around him in weird patterns. He could faintly see the shapes of some people around, but none that he knew. They spoke to each other but disappeared as the clouds covered the sky. |
