★ LORE

"I cannot help but feel that you bringing me here is some sort of assassination attempt," Dawn Jr remarked as the oddly sleek doors opened automatically.

Next to her, Betelgeuse let out a small scoff. "Quite frankly, you are too valuable to kill off. Now, come on."

Unlike the other Research Bases, the hallway itself was bereft of... anything. The walls and ceiling were made almost entirely of dull black material, with not a single glowing line or symbol to be seen save for the strip on the ceiling to provide illumination to the room. There were no etchings, no marks, nothing to indicate what the purpose of this place was. The only break in the hallway's uniform colour and design was a plate of grey stone at the end of it.

"Did my mother not design this place?"

"She did," Betelgeuse stated, his footsteps echoing in the silence of the empty hall, and left it at that.

As reluctant as she was to admit it, her mother was indeed a decent architect; she designed most of the Research bases and the Flight Ambassador Office, after all. Notably, Dawn Sr was incredibly fond of symbology, and her work usually included a stylised phoenix or something of the sort on the entrance. If she had designed Base MEHEN to include no ornamentation at all, then she must have considered this an extremely serious matter.

"Mhm. Onto the platform you go."

The two of them stepped onto the platform. It didn't flash. It didn't rumble. It didn't do anything that Dawn could sense at all.

But after a second, the wall in front of them began to dissolve, falling apart into yellow lines and sinking into the floor. The elevator was revealed.

Dawn frowned, but stepped onto it. Betelgeuse followed soon after.

Down it descended.

There was nothing that could be seen on the way down except the blank black walls. The elevator continued down a long, plain shaft, and it wasn't until they reached the bottom a good ten minutes later (at least, that was what it had seemed like) that it opened into a corridor. The walls, floor and ceiling were made of the same matte black material, while the only source of light was the single, solid glowing circle embedded in the ceiling.

Betelgeuse's necklace flashed, and the door before them also dissipated into yellow lines. The corridor before them opened up into a much more normal room. Dawn Jr looked around before she stepped in.

"Decontamination," he said. "Go on in."

"Am I going to get briefed on what is within?" she asked, hearing the mechanisms in the room whir to life.

Betelgeuse just sighed. "...to put it rather mildly, while your mother was in Exile, she came across an eldritch being."

"An eldritch being," Dawn repeated incredulously.

"Nobody knows its name, let alone where it came from, so we gave it the code title of Apophis. Dawn, however, did find out that it had the ability to devour things on a metaphysical level after the fight between her and Eliana attracted its attention - apparently it devoured the portion of Exile containing Ignatius, and Dawn sent Eliana back to Sornieth for her own safety before confronting the beast. From what she could tell, it has been sapping away Sornieth's natural energies and even the Shade, using it to grow. Once it finished consuming all of the energy within Exile..."

"It would force its way into Sornieth and devour dragonkind and Beastclans alike," Dawn Jr concluded. "But, Mother is back in Sornieth, so how does that work?"

"When Exile collapsed, your mother used a substantial amount of her own power to seal it in place. Meanwhile, we had already been preparing for this ever since Lynx passed on her message, and built this place for the express purpose of containing it. Here. There are charms on it to stop you from going insane."

Dawn Jr gulped and took the protective equipment he passes her. "That bad?"

"She sealed it away for good reason. You will understand once you get there," was the reply.

More swirls of yellow heralded the materialisation of a pair of walkways, and the disintegration of two spots on the wall. The path backwards was revealed, but so was the path forwards. So, Dawn Jr continued. The path forwards took them down a set of a corridor and then a set of stairs. The main door, large enough to accomodate a single Imperial, was also completely blank and sealed shut.

It opened piece by piece, over the course of thirty seconds or so. It was not just the one door, because there was another identical one behind it, and then another behind that.

It might be a bit too much.

The third door cracked open.

The power that slammed into her was a physical force, and Dawn Jr wheezed as the air was driven from her lungs.

'Or,' Dawn Jr thought, 'it might not have been enough.'

She hadn't even set eyes on whatever the source was, and it felt overwhelming.

Behind the vault doors was an observation deck. Rigel and Hatysa were here; the former was squinting out towards the giant chasm, a space that appeared to be made entirely out of void. It appeared completely and utterly empty. Just the sight of it had her feathers standing on end. It made her want to shiver, and filled her with an emotion that she could only describe as half terror and half confidence.

Then the blackness shifted slightly, and she felt her face go white and a chill shoot down her spine when the faint light from the observation deck reflected off a very, very large something.

Scales. What she was currently seeing, despite her own incredulity, was a giant reptilian being, with scales each as large as the doorway she had just walked through. Which cracked open a gigantic eye, which had to be at least triple Rigel's height across when fully opened.

"..." was the creature's disinterested pronouncement, its voice a rumble that physically shook the world around it.

The weight of its attention, barely invested as it seemed to be, was a palpable thing, almost keeling her over. Time itself may as well have stopped for how completely Dawn froze in that moment.

It was utterly incomprehensible. Try as she might, she could not quantify what the being in front of her was, even with her eyes adjusting to the inky darkness.

Dawn had seen her mother at the height of her power turn night to day as she had battled Dusk and a concentrated manifestation of the Shade.

The power of the being before her was, if anything, greater still.

Dawn swallowed, trying to regain her bearings. The being's eye closed once again, and she found herself endlessly thankful that she had not received the full brunt of its attention.

"...My mother fought that?" she finally dared to ask, once Hatysa had brought her a chair and a glass of water.

The Spiral gave her a quick nod. "Indeed. We've found that the most effective way to stop it from becoming fully conscious is to seal it in here with enough sunfire to power Sornieth for the next hundred years. Da- your mother agreed to give up the majority of her power while we tried to find a better way to contain it."

That... certainly explained a lot of things. But...

"I... see," Dawn tried, attempting to ignore the fact that she was still shaking slightly. In response, Betelgeuse just let out a sigh and handed her a file.

"Welcome to Project Orion."

★ TRIVIA

• Think Grima levels of big. Or maybe Genshin's version of Apep. Whichever one is bigger. Then scale it up some more so that Lucina is Rigel's size.
• trivia3

★ NOTES

• If a dragon stays too long in its vicinity or if it focuses its full attention on a dragon, the dragon in question might go insane. It's why Base MEHEN is built out of a special alchemically-treated material to protect the researchers, and why Dawn Sr herself enchanted all protective gear to be used within the base.
• Yep, this is Project Orion. It's a misleading name, for sure, but at least the base is called MEHEN.
• and yep, dawn sr isn't actually retired. she may or may not be lowkey terrified of it.

ORI-UTS-GRA-0001: BASIC INFORMATION
Classification: ULTRA TOP SECRET [ISFET]

Entity Name: 0002-UTS-EMS-4-5-GRA "Apophis"
Entity Class: Empress
Disruption Scale: 4*
Potential Threat: 5
Type: Gray
Research Lab: Base MEHEN

Containment: 0002-UTS-EMS-4-5-GRA (henceforth referred to as "Apophis") is to be contained according to Procedure 99942 (see below).

There is currently no known cure for exposure to "Apophis" or shadowstuff; as such, affected individuals should be contained and quarantined for further evaluation. Individuals stationed within Base MEHEN are not permitted to leave the base except for the purposes of carrying out the necessary procedures of Procedure 99942. Individuals who enter the Inner Sanctum without proper authorisation are to be considered a lost cause.

Under no circumstances should any individual interact with "Apophis" without authorisation.

The inner sanctum of Base MEHEN is to be flooded with Overseer Helios' sunfire (set to [REDACTED]% concentration) on a weekly basis to inhibit the energy consumption abilities of "Apophis" and prevent it from awakening. The

Description: "Apophis" is a massive draconic entity strongly resembling an Imperial. Its full length is impossible to determine, but is hypothesised to be between 300 to 500 kilometers. Its head measures roughly 150m in diameter, and sections of the body proper are as large as 300m in diameter. Due to the fact that its scales absorb almost 99.9% of light (see File ORI-UTS-GRA-0002), it appears to be completely black in colour save for its eyes, which glow bright yellow for some unknown reason.

"Apophis" is currently unconscious, only moving slightly when it feels pain. It is fully located within the Inner Sanctum of Base MEHEN and chained down with several seals as per Procedure 99942. It constantly excretes a thin layer of a viscous, dark grey substance (henceforth titled "0002-A" or colloquially as "shadowstuff") that pools at the bottom of the cavern. Analysis of "shadowstuff" has shown it to possess much of the same properties as "Apophis" itself; a special channel was hence built to collect the shadowstuff to prevent overflow within the Inner Sanctum as well as for controlled testing in a highly-secured laboratory within the Lower Level.

"Apophis" consumes magical energy; past observations (see Addendum A and File ORI-UTS-GRA-0002: Experiment Logs) have shown that such consumption is indiscriminate except for Overseer Helios' sunfire (the reason is unknown). It is not known exactly how "Apophis" consumes or processes this energy, it has physically grown larger and stronger after consumption. Its diet seems to be impossible to satiate. Sunfire appears to hurt "Apophis" directly, though the exact means are not known. It is hypothesised that Overseer Helios' sunfire most likely either inhibits its energy intake or counters it. However, other sources of sunfire (see ORI-UTS-GRA-0002) do not seem to be able to affect it to the same extent or even at all.

"Apophis" is a cognitohazardous entity; direct observation of "Apophis" without proper protection causes severe mental alterations in viewers. Individuals who directly observe "Apophis", as well as any individuals within an uncertain distance of "Apophis", experience inexplicable head pain, paranoia, and intense fear and panic. Prolonged exposure or facing the brunt of its attention may lead to permanent mental instability (with psychosis and memory loss or alteration being the most common), or cause comas or death.

"Apophis" appears to have telepathy, given that it has apparently contacted the leader of the cult dubbing themselves "Sages of Ouroboros" (see File OUR-RES-GRA-0001: Sages of Ouroboros).

*Note: Disruption Scale is 4, not 5, because it hasn't awoken yet. Once it awakes and Overseer Helios officially declares war on it, then it will be changed to 5 and Hierophant.

Addendum A: An interview with Overseer Helios wrote:
DIRECTOR ALPHA ORIONIS: Testing, testing, is this working?
OVERSEER HELIOS: It appears to be. Shall we begin?
AO: Let's.
OH: Very well. It was during my fight with Eliana that I... you were briefed on Eliana's situation, yes?
AO: More or less.
OH: Ah. I realised that the amount of energy being thrown around was far less than expected, but initially I thought nothing of it. It was only up till the end of the fight that I...

OH: It devoured the entirety of that area, Bet. That place literally was removed from existence, and I knew I had to repel it before it swallowed up the whole of Exile. I couldn't save the others, but I could at least seal it off to minimise the damage. That's why the apparitions of the other dragons in Exile occasionally appear around my house; I wanted to at least give whatever remained of them a chance to live, I suppose. Still... I do not know how I sealed it; I was mostly working off of gut feelings and the most powerful spells in my arsenal. I nearly burnt through my whole magic stockpiles that day; till now it still hasn't recovered.
AO: Ah. So

OH: I... (pause) ...apologies.
AO: Do you need water?
OH: That would be appreciated.
(Pause)
OH: ...thank you. Now,

Experiment #: 0110
Researcher(s): Helios, Alpha Orionis
Description: Tested 10ml of equal concentration of sunfire from the following dragons on a 5mg sample of shadowstuff. Petri dishes used are magically inert and do not contain magical energy.
A: Dawn Eileen Regina Blazelight Sr
B: Dawn Ellen Blazelight Jr
C: Elio Blazelight Shadowbane
D: Victoria Summershall Blazelight
E: Zia Summershall Blazelight
F: Eileen Blazelight
G: Aurealis Blazelight
H: Amalia Blazelight
I: Regina "Seirios" Blazelight
J: Golden Blazelight
K: Placeholder, 10ml of pure liquid elemental fire magic.
All dragons gave sunfire voluntarily. They were told that it was to test the minute differences between each dragon's sunfire (which was technically true), so that the rationale would pass Laurel's scrutiny.
Result:
A: Sunfire successfully dispelled all shadowstuff without dissipating. Sensors detected no shadowstuff remaining; no sunfire was dissipated. Results consistent with previous experiments.
B: Sunfire completely repelled shadowstuff, but did not dispel it. Sunfire remained on petri dish and did not dissipate. When petri dish was emptied of shadowstuff, analysis indicates that the area that contained sunfire was completely free of corruption, but the rest of the petri dish returned the same as the null result.
C: Sunfire successfully dispelled about 3.33mg of shadowstuff before dissipating. Sunfire lasted the longest compared to the rest that dissipated, but was relatively slow in dispelling shadowstuff.
D:
E: Sunfire dispelled shadowstuff, but dissipated shortly afterwards. Similar to Test A otherwise.
F:
G:
H: Sunfire sputtered and immediately dissipated.
I: Sunfire successfully dispelled about 5.0mg of shadowstuff before dissipating. Sunfire dissipated the fastest, but dispelled shadowstuff extremely quickly.
J:
K: Same result as Experiment #0056.
Conclusion: The closer one's biological relationship to Dawn Sr is, the more effective the sunfire is at repelling and dispelling shadowstuff. Ignatius' bloodline is better at dispelling shadowstuff. The exception is Zia; refer to File DAY-UTS-WHITE-0001 (Project Daybreak clearance needed). Regina's, despite [DATA EXPUNGED], was the second worst in terms of endurance - likely due to her naturally being weak against the Shade, and shadowstuff being similar in composition. Amalia's result is more likely due to being a vampire and thus having much weakened Light magic in general.
