March Comes In Like a Lion (3-Gatsu no Lion)

Opening

For a series to tackle such a complex and individual experience like depression, March Comes in Like a Lion dances, floats, sinks, and flows through the emotions of the main character Rei. Raised as an adopted child of a family that highly values Shogi skills (a Japanese board game like chess), Rei pours his life into being a professional player who participates in tournaments to support himself. The stress from each game wears on the boy, and his school and social life are highly neglected, until he comes into the folds of a family that welcomes, accepts, and loves him unconditionally. This family of sisters and their grandfather have their own struggles to deal with, but the wholesome way they hang on to every happiness inspires Rei to slowly begin learning how to form relationships with others in his life.

The sometimes somber, gut-wrenching reality that the show deals with is alleviated by wholesome, happy moments and events, and is a beautifully animated slice-of-life with an excellent soundtrack and art style. I'd highly recommend watching for realistic characters, great story, fun learning about Shogi, cooking, introspection, and experiencing the life of another in a meaningful and impactful way.
