Flamingos are the national bird of the Bahamas and are most commonly found in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. In early Egyptian culture flamingos were a representation of the god Ra, who is known as the god of the sun. They are extremely vocal birds and can be heard vocalizing by grunting or growling at each other. Before breeding they split into colonies of 15-50 and both males and females perform synchronized ritualistic mating displays. They typically form strong pair bonds but can change mates based on the availability of breeding partners. Both males and females contribute to building the nest for their egg. For the first 6 days the adults and chicks stay near the nesting site.

They wade in water and stand with one leg while tucking the other leg into their body. Flamingos have been known to fly 500-600km each night in between habitats.
