Over their decade as a mech pilot, Contralto watched their squadron steadily rise in ranks after the legendary Ace led them to countless victories against the invading alien Nephilim forces. A tangled mix of envy, duty, and affection grew quietly.

Contralto has co-parented their daughter, Bubbles, with Ace ever since they rescued her from a levelled city. When she was younger, Contralto was explicitly clear with Ace that they didn’t want her near the mechs since they were dangerous, but Ace secretly snuck her out for a flight anyway since she’d expressed so much interest in them. Contralto was deeply hurt that Ace would betray their trust like that, but also begrudgingly had to accept that Bubbles was her best self only when she was piloting a mech. The sting of it fades over time, but never truly stops hurting.

In a moment of weakness, Contralto secretly sabotaged a key speech that Ace had asked them to review. The day of the speech dawned and Ace delivered it without the changes. Contralto's heart sank, torn up by regret - did Ace accidentally skip over the edits? Did they know Contralto had tried to tear them down? Did they think it was an honest mistake? The unbearable guilt of betraying Ace's trust like that ate Contralto alive every night, tempering all future thoughts of sabotage.

Once, Ace and another pilot got trapped behind Nephilim lines. They were recovered safely, but Contralto could tell something had changed in them. A few weeks later, Ace was suddenly arrested for allegedly taking their mech off the radar for a night. A stunned Contralto was made the interim squadron leader in Ace’s absence - they’d always dreamed of leading a squadron of their own, but not like this…

When Ace returned from the litigations, they stayed tight-lipped about where they’d flown that night. Business seemed to return to normal until Ace secretly approached Contralto and three other squadron mates, including Bubbles. Ace asked them to follow them at midnight in committing treason by stealing their mechs and going rogue. Ace couldn’t say why, only that they needed all of their help.

As the hours counted down, thoughts of turning Ace in and seizing the opportunity of a lifetime waged war against Contralto’s complicated feelings for Ace. A sorrow-stricken but desperately hopeful Bubbles met Contralto in the hangar. She buried her face in their chest and Contralto's heart ached as they wiped her tears away.

At midnight, their mech vanished from the radar alongside four others.

It's still unbelievable to me how much Contralto evolved into
a full character over just three hours of gameplay!!

Look at the original intro I sent to my group before playing the game!!!

THAT'S LITERALLY EVERYTHING I KNEW ABOUT THEM, AND YET!!!
They ended up so fully realized and well-rounded. What a game. What a story.
It is not an exaggeration to call it literally life-changing.
