Hurricane isn't controlled by the Hivemind, but he sometimes still feels a restlessness, an overwhelming itch in the back of his brain to Work. This urge led him to the Shifting Expanse where there is always work to be done, in the hope it might settle him. Hurricane got more than he bargained for when one of the electrical nodes which kept appearing overcharged. He was close enough to be hit by the explosive shock but instead of being fried, Hurricane's body was forever changed. He didn't realise that he still carried a static charge when he returned to the lair, and couldn't have known that dragons coming into contact with that charge would be similarly changed. The static abated after a few days, but it had already affected his mate Friday, Hoku, Fish, Cocoabean and Lilystep, changing them into Sandsurges. After the second generation, hive genes become entirely non-dominant, meaning that hive lineage only counts for the drone's direct descendants.
