Frond

He actually is atypical in that he does NOT fit into this category. Frond is not a blood mage, but he uses his power for plants in his gardening.

Lore notes:
- Named himself.
- First of his parents' children; hatched and grew up as a Black Pearl. Doesn't have a good or bad relationship with his parents, really. Mostly cold and indifferent toward one another. Mostly just left to himself. (Though he feels kind of insecure about them since they're more typical "wicked" dragons one would find among the Black Pearls, while he is...not...really...) Still admires his father's cunning from afar, even if it does make him feel like he's not measuring up.
- Rather introverted. Quiet, likes being by himself, but has a very active (and largely self-contained) mind. (When he's around Ossu, though, he can get very prickly and loud/tsundere, friendship version.)
- Avid gardener. Especially loves experimenting with breeding plants within the Spiral. Has gotten some interesting results.
- His insecurity about his relationship with his father (and not really knowing what his father actually thinks of him) has, in part, led to his disgust of and animosity toward fellow Black Pearl, Ossutek, who has a clear and loving relationship with his own father. (Though Frond may not realize that this is the main source of his feelings, instead thinking they come from Ossu being a necromantic construct made with magic that shouldn't be achievable with necromancy. Also, that Ossu wasn't affected by the creatures in the dark. He just feels like he breaks all the rules that everyone else is affected by, and has no consequences.) Despising him so, you would think that he would just keep his distance from Ossu, but, actually, Frond spends a lot of time with him. He says it's because he's worried that Ossu would get himself destroyed without help, but he actually feels simultaneously drawn to him (for his innocence, and other traits you can't find among the corrupted Black Pearls) and disgusted by him (for reasons already explained, but in summary, he sees Ossu as unfairly having a bunch of benefits and no consequences. Yep, he's jealous. All of this is exaggerated by, the innocent, nonaggressive naivete Ossu displays in response to Frond's own posturing.) Inadvertently, Frond treats Ossu as a curious puzzle he keeps turning over and over by spending his time with him (and may even be accidentally growing fond enough of him to unconsciously see him as a friend.)
- Calls Ossutek "Zombie."
- Fern powers? (listen before you judge; ferns are cool)
- Bracken (a genus of fern) releases allelopathic biochemicals, used to dominate other vegetation by affecting their ability to grow. Frond perhaps is able to release various kinds of these chemicals himself, stimulating growth and production of various life forms (mainly plants) and hindering these factors in others (such as undesirables like pests and weeds.)
- Ptaquiloside is a toxin produced by bracken ferns. It is a carcinogen, meaning that can cause cancer (i.e., by disrupting the cells' metabolic process.) It has an unstable chemical structure normally, but perhaps Frond can produce this toxin at will, and control how it effects the DNA of cells. Perhaps he can even use this to modify some life forms positively. (this is fiction. Ordinarily, this would influence the entire food chain in which whatever was affected was, and it would not be good for whatever ate the affected thing, or whatever ate the thing that ate the affected thing.) In its pure form, this compound is colorless, amorphous, and readily soluble in water. However, it can also be in the plant's spores and be inhaled. Perhaps Frond can produce a spore-like substance himself filld with the compounds he wishes to create?





If I ever breed this guy or something, I may start a naming scheme based on ferns. I.e., Bracken, and/or names derived from the scientific names "Dennstaedtiaceae" and "Pteridophyta."
