Kholin is the adoptive son of Radinen and Quinlan, who manage the clan gardens together, and they have raised Kholin in their footsteps. Therefore, just like his fathers, Kholin is a kind and gentle gardener with a natural affinity for plants. Flowers bloom wherever he goes, and his herbivorous clanmates trust him and his fathers that they will never starve under their careful watch.

Kholin has a soft and sensitive spirit, and has a huge heart. He bursts into tears when a flower is uprooted by a careless dragon, he weeps when a harvest dies before its time, and his heart sinks when the leaves of a plant begin to curl. Other dragons sneer at him and his sensitive soul, as they don’t understand and could never care for Kholin’s garden the way he does.

But Kholin persists. Under his overseeing eye, no harm will come to his garden, or the garden plots overseen by his fathers. Although Kholin is kind and meek, he also lacks a spine, which has allowed him to be swayed by Cadfael. The electric fences and automatic sprinklers that help sustain his garden are a mystery to Quinlan and Radinen, who prefer the old-fashioned ways of keeping a garden. But in Kholin’s eyes, he is just protecting his garden, and by extension, just protecting his heart from being broken again.
