There are times he seems as much beast as dragon, eyes flashing underneath fur and teeth that may as well be his own, startling into unpredictable bursts of magic and noise, running wild through the Grove snapping at fireflies. If he is part-wolf at least he is more or less a tame one: he smiles at hatchlings, leaves gifts at Lillith’s feet, wears polite and friendly so well that some days they almost seem to fit him. Even then, though, if you look into his eyes you will see only the reflection of dark woods.

Sometimes he disappears for days, weeks, followed by a steady trickle of owlcats, hippogriffs, antelopes, until only the most loyal familiars are left in the clan; somehow, he keeps them hidden away from friends and foe alike, the whole mismatched pack of them, and there will be no trace of them until they appear one morning on the edge of the clan’s territory, curled up in a patchwork of fur and feathers.
