There’s a certain way the truth tastes in the space between her tongue and the roof of her mouth, a certain lilt of sweetness, crisp and warm like honey on apples. When Lilith comes home after a long while away, she picks up her mate like a hatchling by the scruff of his neck and they fly together up, up through the dense branches to the starlit quiet treetops, and as he grooms the dust of distant lands from her mane she whispers to him small true things, just to remember it.

When she’s gone, Lilith swallows up secrets, spicy-sharp like ginger, tucks them away in her throat until they can be of use, and she spits back lies that as smooth and bitter as dark chocolate. It’s so easy to slip into a new skin for a new clan, to mold herself into something that they can love or trust or ignore, so easy that sometimes she forgets the lie of it for a little while, forgets she was ever anyone else, until in a space of quiet she notices the aftertaste of the words she’s been speaking.
