~ History ~
It began as the Ancients arose.

A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality.

After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory.

Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real.

A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet.

They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own.

Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it.

The question now is… will they?

~ A Fairytale ~
Despite the crumbling structures, The Sunbeam Ruins are a place of beauty. Sunlight pours through broken stained glass, rainbow prisms speckling the sunbleached grass. The ocean waves glitter like dragonscales, the small tributaries winding like blue and white Spirals. Motes of light float on the warm breeze, dragons here even attract and wear the auras like a personal pixie entourage... Scholars may look upon the ruins, and see a cautionary tale, a society that disappeared into dust... But Sweetheart sees only brightness and jubilation, a fairyland at the end of the rainbow.

Sweetie was born here. Raised here. She knows she is duty and honor bound to rid dragonkin of the plague of Nightmares. But they are a theoretical threat to her, the stuff of proverbs and bedtime stories. Seems her parents have done their job too well, for Sweetheart has never known a moment of true fear, raised safely within the boundaries of the Lightweaver's domain...

Healing bad dreams and delusions is a noble calling, and Sweetie is proud to help. But Sweetie's learned that sweet dreams don't have to be invented with magic; the world is full of inspiring, natural beauty, if only you go looking. Why spend time stuck in your head, when you could be out in the world! She often gives her Custodian, Dawnbringer, the slip, preferring to be out exploring than stuck meditating. She scavenges from the broken city, and creates mosaics, murals, chimes, upcycled Apparel and pottery, even community gardens! Having purpose and art banishes toxic energy. Rather than be beckoned like a shaman, she likes to help people find and create their own beauty.

It's surprisingly easy for Sweetheart to whizz about her hobbies. Maybe with so many brothers, sisters, cousins - dreamers of all shapes and sizes - it's easy for one, little dragon to get overlooked. Or maybe the eyes of her parents, and her Custodian, are fixed on future threats, and it unburdens them a little to let their charge frolic naively while she can... Maybe they all need something to smile about....

One thing is for certain: Sweetheart's escapades have not gone unnoticed by all.

~ Sweethearts Waltz ~
Between the realms of dreams and reality, lies a third magical plane, known to the Wish dragons. Every plucked lucky clover, every coin tossed into a fountain, every whoosh of a blown out birthday candle, or puff of dandelion seeds, or murmur beneath an evening star, births a new dragon, born to fulfill said wish. They are a joyful, generous lot, but elusive: The limitations of the physical plane confuse them, so they prefer to stay hidden in between, and help - with their magic - from afar. They are attracted to dreamers and open-hearted individuals.

Is it any wonder that Shu found Sweetheart?

It began with the Moonportal. Sweetheart was drawn to the gateway that had sat, dormant, at the edge of the Sunbeam Ruins for hundreds of years, and now finally had awakened again. The promise of new lands to explore, new people to meet, one pawprint away, was too much for her yearning heart to ignore. Every day she awoke, attended her duties, tilled her garden, worked her crafts, healed her charges... And every day's end, she couldn't help but be drawn back to the archway. She stared long into its shimmering, mysterious promise... Dare she?...

Not today.

Perhaps tomorrow? There were too many who needed her here...

And she would end her days making silent wishes for the goodwill of all those in need of a sweet dream...

Shu heard her heart's every desire. Being born of shooting stardust and a plucked Loves Me/Loves Me Not petal, Shu's entire essence was the stuff of soft, romantic dreams. He was made to soothe a yearning heart. In his own realm, he was wispy as the wind, as fleeting as good luck. But each evening, when Sweetheart bore her heart beside the Moonportal, Shu was drawn to her, essence to essence. And in this physics-defying space, this tiny tear in reality, Shu found it easier to condense into something more... real.

Shyness and inexperience got the better of him. He hid as a cloud, a trick of the light, an echo of laughing gulls and seaspray... He was enamored with the way that all of Sweetheart's wishes were for others. He wanted to share her dream, not startle her out of it. But even if he'd wanted to POP into reality, he didn't know how. Affecting already living things was far easier than shaping himself. Little by little, he learned to use his magic to grant her blessings: A blooming garden, a cache of heretofore unscavenged tiles, a particularly pearlescent seashell...

Sweetheart was no fool. She knew she was being followed by something. But what? Not a Nightmare, her new friend wasn't malevolent. A familiar of some kind? Whoever her admirer was, she didn't want to embarrass them by calling them out. They must have a good reason for being so discreet. Maybe there were benevolent creatures that lived in sweet dreams, the same way that Nightmares lived in their wicked fugue, and Sweetheart had inadvertently gotten one's attention? After the third or forth time that Sweetheart caught her shadow smiling and prancing of its own accord, she decided to call her new friend Shadow. (Shu didn't mind that she mispronounced his name, she got it mostly right.) She never asked her Shadow prying questions, like, "Where did you come from?" or "What are you?", but instead spoke to Shadow as if he had always been there: "These daisies look darling, don't they? Thank you for them, Miss Darla will love a bouquet to brighten up her bedside while she's on wingrest." "The crumpets are scrumptious today! Good thing you found that extra stick of butter. The children in the East Wing will love their snack!" "Those puckerberries were just the pigment I needed to brighten up this painting. That was clever of you, suggesting those." Sweetheart was profoundly thankful for her new companion, and not just because he was so helpful. It was nice to finally have someone to share her day with. Not just partaking in the activities. Someone who shared her feelings. Someone who believed, like she did, that brightening up another's day was a beauty and magic all its own...

One fateful evening, as the first stars began to peek out, and the firebugs blinked their courtship dance, Sweetheart stood before the Moonportal, and sighed. For the first time, in a long time, she wasn't dreaming of anywhere else. "I've always loved twilight... No longer day, not yet night... It feels... It feels a bit like dream magic. Like anything's possible..."
Shu, in the realm between realms, was right in the gateway's mouth, if only she could see.
They both raised their paws longingly, as if they could push back an invisible curtain, and reveal the way to each other.
"I wish..."

Suddenly, it was like watching watercolors run. Out of the evening half-light, and the shadows of the trees. Out of the blue-green sky, and the rosy wildflowers. A wide face, perky ears, a feathered ruff, tiny paws... Shu coalesced before Sweetheart's eyes, her wish come true. Her friend! And something new. From someplace adventures are born...

Wind fluffing his feathers, dry grass prickling his feet, warm stone against his wagging tail... The symphony of far-off family, and chirping insects, and rolling waves... The multitude of sensations flooded Shu properly for the first time, but it wasn't until Sweetheart had flown at him, wrapped her neck around his, squeezed his paws in hers, and crowed, "Hello, Shadow!" that he realized he was whole.

"Hello, Sweetheart."
