ORIGINS
Donny first found his passion in plushie making. Toy shops all across Neopia manufactured perfect renditions of each Neopet species, but he stitched everything by hand, putting love into each and everyone one. As his artistic ability grew, he began to design his own fictional animals, basing them loosely on real Neopet species, but with enough differences to call them his own. He gave them their own species names too - like horses and dolphins and bears. Donny wanted to expand beyond what everyone else was doing and to cultivate a little creativity inside the Neopian youth. |
Donny scheduled a grand release day with sales and promotions, and perhaps bit off more than he could chew. The night before the event, he still wasn't ready. Not only had he not set up the shop for the (hopeful) influx of customers, he still wasn't finished sewing. Determined to meet his self-imposed quota, he was up so late that he fell asleep right at his desk. When he awoke, he unceremoniously shoved all the toys into a box and carried it up front, still groggy.
A couple blurry hours later, Donny was arranging his new plushies on the front shelf when he found a silly-looking purple... something. Not only was it the wrong color to be any of the cats he'd intended to make, this particular plushie didn't have the correct characteristics for any of the big cat species he'd created. Despite being fictional, he took his work very seriously, and a cross-over pet was not something he'd intended to create, especially not one in such an out-there color. Embarrassed by his mistake, Donny took this plushie and set it on a shelf in his workroom. Who would want this toy anyway? |
One particularly bad snowstorm, Donny had to board up the shop and was feeling especially alone. He tried burying himself in his work, which usually cheered him up, but it was no use. Defeated, Donny went to bed early, hoping to sleep through the storm. Instead, he had fitful dreams, tossing and turning the whole night. He dreamt of Delina, the crafting faerie. She'd appeared in his bedroom and took pity on him in his loneliness. She said she would grant the purple plushie the gift of life, as long as Donny devoted himself to helping others from that point forward. Donny muttered his agreement before being surrounded by a haze of thick purple smoke. Finally, he slept.
Purled's first memory is being surrounded by purple, her stiff limbs cushioned by billows of lightly scented smoke. Her eyelids felt heavy, as if they'd previously been sewn into place, as her eyes blinked open for the first time. Her vision was glassy, like the surface of a button. The smoke didn't burn her nose; it was actually quite pleasant, but she couldn't remember ever having smelled anything before. The room was dark, with the exception of the light from a few flickering candles filtering through the smoke from far away. She heard soft murmurings, but couldn't determine what they were. And then everything went dark again. When Purled opened her eyes next, her vision was more clear, and the night's rest seemed to have removed the stiffness in her limbs. She had the overwhelming urge to stretch, putting her front feet out as far as they could go and arching her back. At the same time, a soft mewl escaped her throat. The noise startled her for a moment before she realized she was its source. Purled shifted her weight a bit, looking at her surroundings. She spotted a large, red creature, snoozing in its bed, and instinctively knew it was to care for her. Purled carefully climbed down from the shelf she was on and padded softly over to this giant's bed, curling up on its chest in a tight ball, and drifting back off to sleep. |
CHARACTERIZATION
|
Personality
Purled is a reserved, bookish individual, often presenting as shy to outsiders. She dreams big, wishing to bring harmony and authenticity to the world. When Purled was young, she felt directionless and unfulfilled, burying herself in books in search of purpose. Now, she is so consumed with her drive to discover the truth of Lilac Island that she has alienated her sister, Patterned, who rejected her mission outright. Purled exists in turmoil, her sensitivity to criticism and distaste for conflict seemingly incompatible with her strong sense of empathy and desire to do good. Unable to determine a way to make everyone happy, Purled is wallowing in feelings of inadequacy though she will ultimately take the leap towards what she considers her destiny.

THE SPARK
Even trips to Happy Valley left her feeling dissatisfied. An overabundance of Christmas trees and poinsettias paled in comparison to the vivid colors and cultures she'd heard about from far off lands. Happy Valley was just... Christmas, all the time. No flowers blooming in the spring. No leaves changing colors in the fall. No seasons at all, unless you counted the months where the ice was slushy instead of solid (she didn't).
One day, when Purled was cleaning out the attic, she found a battered copy of Terror Mountain Tales. This book contained the following editorial: |
Quote:
Much of Terror Mountain's history remains a mystery. Record books once housed on the mountain were lost, buried under thousands of pounds of snow in an unexpected avalanche. No one alive today remembers, so we must rely on what was written by visitors and housed in their home kingdoms. These accounts are, naturally, difficult to find and quite fragmented. I have compiled what I could, including a healthy dose of speculation on my part.
Terror Mountain today has no ruler, though it is watched over by the benevolent snow faerie, Taelia. It seems this wasn't always the case; a High Priestess of unknown name was, perhaps, the original protector of the land. Whether she also ruled as a monarch is impossible to tell. There are rumors of an island ruled by Princess Lilac. Was she given Lilac Island as a point of honor, or did the High Priestess run her off of the mainland?
Despite the lack of formal leadership, Terror Mountain is a generally peaceful place, its culture heavily rooted in the giving spirit of Christmas. Its population is primarily located in Happy Valley, where the weather is most temperate and the decor most festive. A massive amount of neopets flock to the Valley every December for the Advent Calendar and the Festival of Lights. Tourism is Terror Mountain's main economy, with the incomes from December supporting the kingdom through the rest of the year.
The tourists primarily stay in the Valley, with only a brave few making it into the surface tunnels of the Ice Caves, or perhaps past a few twists and turns for the true adventurers. These caves make up miles and miles of crisscrossing tunnels, burrowing deep inside the mountain itself. The protection from the elements outside and the magical heat of the Heart of the Mountain allow it to stay a near-constant temperature year round. The Bori make their home here, though few others ever do.
Even fewer foreigners make it to the frozen peak, which is largely uninhabited, and no one even knows the location of Lilac Island, which is either a well-kept secret by the locals, or, as I suspect, is actually unknown.

Dear Professor Fairweather,
My name is Purled, and I live on the peak of Terror Mountain. There isn't really much to do up here, so I read a lot, and I recently learned of your journey to find the Lost Isle. I am amazed by both your discovery and your perseverance in the face of uncertainty. I am sure you are very busy, but I find myself struggling on a similar journey at the moment, and I was hoping you would be able to give me some advice.
Recently I was reading Terror Mountain Tales and there was a patchwork article on Terror Mountain History, in which the author attempts to piece together decades of lost unrecorded history. The author speculates about the existence of an island called Lilac and a princess by the same name. Word of mouth is the only source cited and many disclaimers are made as to lack of proper evidence, but I also read The Endless Tales of Pirate Adventures, said to be written by a pirate retired from Captain Scarblade's crew. That pirate laments never making it back to Lilac Island to see the Lupe Princess, Lilac, again. He speaks of her beauty and describes her as clothed entirely in furs with a glistening ice crown on her head.
Putting those two tidbits together, I theorize that this island could very well be near here. My sister, Patterned, thinks I'm being ridiculous. She says pirates make up stories and that the other book doesn't prove anything. My father, Donny, is encouraging, but I can tell he's trying to temper my expectations. He says there could be hundreds of islands, all the way up and down the entire coast plus hundreds of miles of sea in every direction. Maybe even thousands. He also said there's probably a reason it's not on any maps, that it must not be inhabitable.
Did people say these things to you too? I feel deep down that Lilac Island is real! And that it is somewhere near Terror Mountain. I can feel it calling me. Do I sound crazy? If anyone understands, I know it would be you.
There is a fragment of a map in Undiscovered Treasure that shows islands off the coasts of Terror Mountain, but they're all unmarked and there's no compass rose so can't even tell which way is up. I've spun the book around so many times, but I don't see anything I recognize to use as a landmark. Professor, I fear I'm going insane. I don't know what to do next. I've pretty much exhausted all available resources here. Would you believe Terror Mountain doesn't even have a formal library?
I humbly request your guidance in what to do next. Thank you so much for listening, and I would be forever in your debt if you replied.

Fairweather's interest came with the ability to search more private specialized libraries, but to no avail. With no idea of its coordinates - or even a hint of where to start - and a feeling deep within her that it did exist, Purled grew despondent. She had no sea-faring experience or money to mount a blind expedition.
It appeared her adventure was over; she was slated to remain on this void of a mountain top forever.
THE JOURNEY
One day, Purled was languishing on the shore by the frosty water, looking forlorn and hopeless. Kapst heard her cries and peeked up from the waters to see what was the matter. Hearing her plight, Kapst offered to help with the search. Kapst had his own unique set of resources, personal knowledge of the land and hand drawn maps, developed during his many years of pirating. They quickly came up with a game plan and spent many long days flying over different areas of sea, Kapst carrying Purled on his back. In the evenings, Kapst would build a fire and tell Purled stories of his journeys and all the interesting people he'd met along the way. Once, Purled asked what she could give Kapst in return for his kindness, and he simply said that it was a pirate's sworn duty to answer the call to adventure and to help weeping maidens. Purled found that to be a strange answer, but she had never met a pirate before. |
THE DESTINATION
What Purled (and Kapst!) eventually found is an island caught between two realms. Far, far off the coast of Terror Mountain, Neopia, it is almost a full day's flight even on a straping young dragon such as Kapst. The island appears uninhabited, as far as they can tell, and full of vividly colored plants that seem to grow everywhere despite the frigid climate. There is definitely a magical aura about the place, which is perhaps how the plant life is able to thrive, and how the island has managed to evade discovery for so long.
Purled and Kapst will eventually discover the island's connection to Sorneith - almost another full day's flight from the island lies the Southern Icefield of Sornieth and its neighbor to the north, the Starfall Isles, a region teeming with magic. In the Starfall Isles there is a curious mountain range, the Crystalspine Reaches, that have morphed and curved inward, with pieces of the mountain tops inevitably breaking off and landing in the sea. Imbued with the warping magics of the land and unanchored to anything below it, one large chunk floated down south into colder climes, and then eventually made its way out out to sea, without anyone ever even realizing it existed.
Perhaps Princess Lilac and her people inhabited it when it was closer to the mainland of Sorneith and had to abandon it as it drifted farther and farther out to sea - Lilac's limited magic abilites being no match for the magic inherent in the earth beneath her feet. Caught between two worlds, there's no wonder neither culture has any information and Purled was left heeding the words of pirates!

Not ashamed to say I ran straight to see the rest of your Neopets tab lol you did such phenomenal work on all of them. [Blazewing] spots Purled, engrossed in a book in a cozy corner. The elegance of the veilspun's appearance helps to sober Blazewing's excitement, and she is able to calm down enough to converse a bit. I just wanted to say that you are one of the loveliest Veilspun I have ever seen, and that your colors and accessories do nothing but accentuate your natural charms! Purled's accent really pulls the patchwork together, and I wouldn't have even guessed she had a basic primary! (Not that I think basic is bad, necessarily! It keeps dragons from being overly busy and I appreciate that!) / She's very unique and you can tell from just glancing at her bio that she's Very well loved, and while my neopets lore is rusty, I do find myself wanting to read up on what you have written for her!
