Biography
The dragons hatched from the clan's nests are beautifully and vividly colored, as though without the parents' cognizance the eggs are dipped into some mysterious liquid that seeps through shell to stain the embryos. They are iridescent in the hues of certain crystals mined from the deepest cthonic caverns: shadowy in the light, glowing swirls that are sometimes darker than the abyss, crimson and cerulean familiar only to the compound eyes of wasps. Around the nests the flora blossoms without regard to weather or season and the trees are so laden with fruit that the branches tangle in the grass. There is a strange taste to the apples, berries, and nuts however; a hint of an unnameable flavor that lingers on the tongue just as the colors entrance the eyes. The clan knows that there is something in the water or in the land itself, something that grows up alongside the plants - or mayhap in them. It was Mahogal of the Moon Bog who first attached a name to the enigma when she whispered Outer Gods, words repeated until it reached the Gladekeeper. With the guidance of their deity, the dragons reign in the growth of the trees, the bushes and brambles, even the multi-colored moss and lichens. Their gardens are cultivated and their eggs guarded, and whatever lurks beneath the surface remains placid. |
A thick white mist had appeared over the river, and was softly rising higher. It clutched at the trees with long impalpable arms, it rose higher and higher, chilling the air; and white shapes moved away into the jungle as though the ghosts of shipwrecked mariners were searching stealthily in the darkness for the spirits of evil that long ago had wrecked them on the Yann. As the sun sank behind the field of orchids that grew on the matted summit of the jungle, the river monsters came wallowing out of the slime in which they had reclined during the heat of the day, and the great beasts of the jungle came down to drink.
