Dendra had been born a Fae, but she had never felt a Fae. She wasn't proud or vain about her beautiful colouration or markings, because she couldn't see beyond her small and scrawny body. As soon as she could travel alone, she found herself lucky enough to be adopted into a clan that understood. The Bogsneak there, Opaline, could sense Dendra was unhappy in a way she termed 'a sickness of the soul'. She had taken Dendra under her wing and got her to open up about how she felt, about who she was inside, and how it could never break the surface. How she felt stifled in her own skin. Opaline did not judge her. She listened and thought, devising a plan of action. It took considerable work, as Opaline was no alchemist and had to travel to another clan in Singer's Brook, gathering and exchanging supplies for their skilled brewer. The effort made Dendra self-conscious and doubt began to creep in. What if she changed her mind? What if, after all the lengths Opaline had gone to, Dendra still felt the same? On Opaline's final trip to the Windswept Plateau, she took Dendra with her. Dendra cautiously climbed into the alchemist's cauldron, her tiny frame quickly overcome by the frothing, bubbling goop. She panicked, sinking further, hearing the soothing tones of Opaline's voice but not being able to understand. Then Dendra was completely under and everything went black. When she awoke, Dendra was on soft pillows in a room she did not recognise. She felt sluggish and heavy, her skin still a little damp. She stretched, and became aware of the very physical difference of her body. Her thick, stocky legs, strong neck and powerful tail. "How do you feel?" Opaline asked, calm yet concenerd, hearing Dendra's shocked intake of breath. "...Strange," Dendra replied honestly, although her heart felt strangely light. Opaline was resting by a mirror, and beckoned her gently. Dendra saw herself truly for the first time, and witnessed the uncontrollable, toothy smile spread across her face. The tears glimmering in her small eyes. Opaline nuzzled the base of the large new fan on Dendra's head. "Thank you," she whispered. She looked just like Opaline - proud and beautiful, but more importantly, she looked just like herself. |
